A potential sharer asked me a wise question which I hadn't even thought about...and to be fair I need your opinion please!?

What do you do pay wise when they are on holiday or ill?
Do they still pay you even though they don't come to the yard or not?
(I will ask for £10 per week for 3 days)

Thanks! :-)

Yes they still pay if you have a financial contribution on my yard! People very much have the attitude of the horse still costs them money, sometimes more money as they have to pay others to do the horse on the days the sharer cannot make. £10 for 3 days is very good! :)

We pay a set amount a month and just let the owner know if we are going away. But still pay the same amount all the time.

Personally I think they should still pay. Horse's need paying for come rain or shine, and why should you pay more because they go off on a jolly??? Possibly a bit harsh.... but you get my drift - would they pay more when you went away??? At the end of the day livery etc. needs paying regardless so I think it is more than reasonable that she pays whether she's ridden or not.

And to be fair, I think £10/week is very reasonable.

oh yes otherwise you COULD end up with a situation where sharer can't be bothered to ride so phones to say they are sick/no transport/too wet and windy etc so they don't pay for weeks on end as not turned up.

I am a sharer, I work a 3 week rota for my job so I kind of have set days, but I just let owner know the week before when I am coming. Some weeks I do more, and over Christmas I had norovirus and then flu so wasn't up for a week
I pay the same set monthly amount because I figure it evens itself up. And honestly - I'm not too bothered, I love Hannah horse, and I love having my weeks off work when I can see her every day :-)

Owners don't take a holiday from paying livery owner when they are too ill to get to the yard or go on holiday so why should someone that shares be any different?
A sharer should pay their payment regardless of whether or not they ride due to illness or holiday. Obviously if illness or an injury to rider means that they can't ride for a bit ( ie month or longer) then questions need to be asked as to whether the share can continue and a new one found.
I would ask for a month's paid notice as well if a sharer does decide to give up sharing. Only fair because it may take that time or longer to find someone else.
£10 a week for 3 days is very good in my opinion, especially when you consider livery, shoeing/trims, tack, feed and any veterinary bills.

I'm a sharer and pay the same regardless of whether I'm on holiday, sick, horse is lame etc coz like many others have said the horse doesn't stop costing money just because I can't get there! And if he was mine, I wouldn't get a payment holiday!

£10 per week is extremely good value!! I pay £25 for 2/3 days depending on my work!

Yes they should still pay- owner still has to cover costs! Agree, £10 is soooooo cheap!! :)

I agree... although don't tell the lady I share with £10 a week is cheap ;) It is the perfect amount for 5 days a week I feel!!! ;)

(Although in fairness it means she has a lovely, fit, nicely schooled horse to do everything on whilst she works on her youngster full time :))

I also pay for shoes.

If I am ill or on holiday I still pay everything, she just has to check another pony!

! months notice, pay if she is away, 1 weeks notice if she cant do her day.

£10 is quite good, but id call it reasonable if its flexible happy hacking and she does any jobs :)

She can hack as much as she wants and could have lessons/hire a school about 10mins hack away is she was interested.
Only job is poo picking on her days :)
