Ive been looking for a sharer and have had a few replies to my ads but have narrowed it down to a couple of possibles ,Ive asked that they have a 30 minute lesson with my instructor to see if they are suitable, not heard from them again am I being unreasonable?
I let 1 person try my horse and explained what Im trying to do with her etc and she rode her so aggressively my horse tried to rear so this is why I want a more controlled situation for prospective sharers.

I understand where you are coming from as in wanting the best for your horse, but, you have possibly scared them off.

I think if I was looking to share a horse I may be a little daunted at the idea of a lesson but would definately agree to it. After all if they're not prepared to have a lesson on the horse then how can they expect to be able to school it regularly on their own.
Personally if they dont want to have a lesson then I might be a little suspicious that their riding standard isnt as high as they have described...
I'm sure you'll find someone in the long run, better to take a little bit longer and find someone who's suited to you and your horse :)

Were you asking the sharer to pay for the lesson?
If yes then that would certainly put me off. Wouldn't want to pay for a lesson on a horse I may not get on with and with an unknown instructor.

If you were paying then it wouldn't bother me.

Hi

I think I would be a bit imtimated to have a lesson (and be assessed by an owner) the first time I tried a horse. If your expecting them to pay for the lesson I probably would say no thanks.
I would at least want to try the horse first and then if I was interested then have a lesson.

I can see why you would want to do that and as someone who sharers I wouldn’t mind having a lesson to see if I got on with your horse as long as it wasn’t too expensive.

However some people might think it was a bit cheeky to want them to pay for a lesson before they had even decided if they liked your horse enough to take on the share.

It would probably but people off less if you could give them the initial lesson. Is that something you could do?

I appreciate that you have had a bad experience when it was just you watching someone try your horse, but you need to be able to speak up and say if you are unhappy with the way someone is riding/handling your horse. If you struggle with this initially it could lead to all sorts of problems with your sharer in the future.

Good luck there are some nice sharers out there :)

It really wouldn't bother me tbh.

Not sure whether I'd want a lesson for first ride, just as I like to be able to relax and 'get a feel' of the horse myself but for second ride, if I liked the horse and it was a definite potential share then yes, even if I had to pay.

HOWEVER, if I was paying, I would be doing some research on the instructor first to make sure they wearn't a total numpty (sorry) If you were paying then yes, whatever, who cares?

I think it is quite an unreasonable request. If you were trying to narrow two down and couldn't choose between sharers and they had both already ridden the horse once then I can see why this would work.

I would be put off by an ad that said that. Remember they are vetting you as much as they are vetting them and so it isn't a time for being unreasonable.

Thankyou to all who replied to my message, I took note of all your answers and booked a lesson so the sharer could see the horse in action with me and then have a go with my instructor too.I now have a very good sharer who I can trust to look after my very precious horse and not do her damage by bullying her into submission but ride her well.
I got the sharer from advertising at my local tack shop not on here!
Hannah I do know of someone else looking at my yard,if you pm me I will tell you more about it. x
