I'm currently thinking of getting a sharer for 1 or both of my horses as I am not well and not able to ride as often as I used to. Do any of you have sharers? What are the pros and cons?

Do you all have a legally binding agreement?

i have a sharer and she's a big help. she rides my TB whenever she wants and does jobs/helps me with jobs with my youngster. i don't have a written agreement but did already know her- would maybe advise one if you are going to be advertising and taking on a stranger. the negatives can be if you are particularly precise about how your horse is looked after - e.g. i can get annoyed if my sharer puts the wrong rugs on etc or leaves horsey in when its raining (he won't melt!!!) but generally she's a big help and its me being anally retentive not her fault!!

I used to share a horse and it worked really well for me and the owner of the horse. We had no legal agreements or anything in writing, but I was very honest about my riding ability and she was very honest about her horse. We are still good friends now, 3 years on, even though I now have my own horse. I saw her advert in a local tack shop and she lived 2 miles down the road. We just did it on a trial basis for a month to start with so either of us could end it at any time. Just be honest about the horse, its routine and what you want the sharer to do and don't be afraid to speak up if things aren't working out. As a sharer I took out BHS gold membership to cover insurance wise too, but check your insurance too. Hope you get better soon and find someone nice to share with.
