I am very excited as I have a new sharer starting on Sunday. BONUS: She is a Grade 2 Dressage Rider (how lucky am I?) so fingers crossed we will see my boy at lots of shows.

Question: She doesnt have her own insurance & I have always insisted on this; Do you make your sharer's take out their own insurance?

I have checked with my insurance company & they have assured me that she & my horse are covered as "anyone riding with the owner's permission, contributing to the care & cost of the horse is covered as long as they are not riding within a working capacity" so it is not needed but I feel safer with separate insurances for some reason. OTT?

Thanks

Hi. 51 views and no "views" on sharer insurance?

Do you insist your sharer has their own?

I have re-read the contract and it states that the "sharer is advised to take out their own insurance" or words to that effect but its not compulsory.

My sharer's have always had their own insurance but as long as she is covered on mine I guess it is acceptable.

My sharer has her own third party and personal accident insurance via the BHS.

As I have 3 horses and can't afford to insure, we also have an agreement in place that she will contribute to any emergency vets bills at my discretion, dependant on circumstances.

Think you will find your insurance only covers for any damage your horse causes or incurrs when she is riding him. However, if she hurts herself she is not covered for personal liability. It's not expensive for her or suggest you find a disclaimer she needs to sign so she could not sue you if she injured herself.

I am a sharer and have always been asked to have insurance. I have BHS which covers the necessities e.g. personal liability etc. It isn't expensive and I think its a good idea to cover most issues etc that could happen.

Never been asked to have my own insurance. Horses have always been insured and I was covered for 3rd party liability under that which is all I'm interested in.

As a sharer I have my own rider insurance. While all the horses I have shared have been insured I feel safer knowing I have my own just in case the owner forgets to pay a premium or something, it would be my luck to have an expensive accident then. Had an issue renewing with NFU so went with Petplan this year at £99.
It also means if I have a try on someone elses horse, I'm covered :)

I currently share but I have no insurance... what does this cover exactly? Very interested :)

If you have an accident and hurt yourself, you have no comeback or cover. It really is ( too my mind) not clear as iniitially I thought my insurance WOULD cover sharers. I called NFU who were helpful and explained my liability. Really is best to get your own cover and the BHS is a good starting point!

When I was a sharer I had the Petplan riders insurance at £6/month. Can't remember exactly what it covered (says online if you're interested) and the personal injury was low (but better than if I had nothing!) but meant I had some liability cover and my owner was happy with it. There was a reason I chose that over the BHS gold membership option -THINK it was because Petplan also cover some emergency vet fee's if something happens whilst you're riding, but I'm not sure as was a while ago now - and I was riding a few horses that weren't insured at the time.

I have spoken to the insurance and they have assured me she is covered under my policy as a sharer but I would rather she had her own. She gets the same cover as I do £10,000 personal cover £1,000 teeth etc.....

Thank you I am with Petplan too as was my last sharer. Another did another company that wasnt worth the paper it was written on or so I am led to believe but felt it a little extreme and mean to dicate which company she used!
