What has happened to all the people who wanted to loan/share more challenging horses? I'm looking for someone at the moment and have just looked through a local advertising site for people looking for loans/shares etc. Everyone seems to want an easy hack/schoolmaster that's 100% in all ways! Is there no-one out there that wants a challenge, or would be happy to ride a more difficult, green, yet very talented horse?

Where you based? I want a horse over summer and don't mind schooling, just not prepared to get decked for someone else's horse! I think that's part of the problem for some, people like me a made wary by previous loans gone wrong when we haven't gone for 100% in every way horses. As well, some are loaning before getting their own first horse so need a safe one, and some don't want to bring on a horse for someone else's benefit and pay for it.

I guess people with the ability to improve a horse get a bit sick of investing time and effort in a horse for it to be whipped away at a moment's notice and maybe even sold at a profit.

There are people out there but don't expect them to pay, and do try to be upfront about your intentions.

If you are in Northamptonshire try sending paddymonty a pm.

Have to agree with both points. I would certainly not pay to school a horse for someone, happy to do it free of charge but would like to know up front the plans for the horse. If horse was to remain and I could get some payback through competing it then I am generally happy to help out with jobs. However, if it was just to bring on to sell then I would expect the horse tacked up and ready to go when I arrived. ;)

Doubt i would be on any use to you though as just about as far from the sea as its possible to get in this country. :(

I know that feeling. I haven't looked as yet as new horse is settling in but I will be after the same thing as you OP.

Wouldn't expect people to pay or do chores but don't want novices or joy riders so am gonna look for good riders interested in helping improve the horse and maybe have fun competing etc at slightly higher level than I'd be interested in. Horse is staying put though, she's a total sweetie and I'm smitten !

PaddyM - you need to move further souff :)

There are a couple out there. I'm looking at the moment (so if anyone is looking near Bedfordshire let me know!)

I've found two of interest, my one isn't fully broken at the moment but I'm not charging them or expecting yard work either. I've made it clear however that once he is broken, I will be charging but they can also stay on, compete etc.

People seem happy with these terms but I think having your expectations right is key. You can't expect someone to come and school your horse and pay for the privilege.

I can't see many experienced people wanting to school a horse for free, let alone pay for it. Fair enough on the terms paddy monty outlined, that makes sense. In the past I've had projects, usually ponies, that I've had good teenage riders for. I did the hard work but wanted the ponies to get used to younger riders too. Once pony been out with me a few times they paid entry fees, pony got more experience as did they, & when they rode at home I taught them. No money changed hands & it was win win.
I found them because my 14.2 seems to be a magnet for young girls & I've always had a lot of time for teens, especially those who have to make do with very cheap or no ponies of their own.

Tell me about it....I've been looking for loaners for a while, have stated it's not a short term thing and they wont be whipped away but finding people say one thing and don't follow up....

My friend is looking for a sharer/loaner for her newish horse, she's based in Hereford. He's lovely but green and she has lost her confidence on him. She's offering free livery on her yard to anyone who wants to loan him but so far she's not had anyone suitable phone about him.

Oh yer I'd love to pay to improve someone elses horse!

I didn't mention anything about charging them!

The thing is, whenever I've ridden someone elses, or bought one, I always go for something a little more challenging/green etc, even from a young age, I've never had easy horses. I just thought that there might be others like that, that want to put the work in for a potentially very rewarding ride?

I'm based in Bournemouth (not actually in the sea LOL, but with costal erosion... Jurassic Coast.... yadayada...)

ETA - Any interest I've had, I've made it clear that this horse inparticular is challenging, but they would have the opportunity to ride the other 2 aswell, and I would be more than happy for them to compete. And none of the horses are going to be sold!

I've been looking for someone to ride/share my 15hh 6yo cox x appy for ages and ages!! Most people that have contacted me have been out of the saddle for ages and are looking to get back into riding?! The other people that have contacted me have talked the talk but failed to deliver the goods and have been quite nervous even just handling him let alone riding him - he is a saint to handle btw!
Suppose they see COB and think he'll be pushbutton and bombproof. He is as genuine as they come BUT he is young and he can be green.
I don't want any financial contribution and I'm not looking for a short term arrangement but still there's no takers!
Before I bought my boy I would have snapped up a cost free but more challenging ride in the blink of an eye!!
Frustrating isn't it?!

Before I got mine I was looking at a loan but it all seemed to be just broken stuff. Now thats fine if you know the owner and that the horse is unlikely to be taken back as soon as its ready for the owner to do the fun stuff on but I'm not willing to put in the hours and competition fees for some one elses youngster with out the knowledge that it will be me that gets to enjoy it once its ready.

H_T7 you didnt mention charging them but a share/ loan would insinuate that they would be paying some thing to ride the horse and would be looking after it. Which may be why you are struggling to find some one. If your not going to charge them and just want a free rider to bring the horse on then chances are you could find one. I'd say word of mouth is the best way to find some one as I have a similar arangment with a friends little pony.

I've been thinking about finding a sharer for mine. I thought being as my cob has only just got home from Rockley and isn't doing much other than minimal schooling and low speed hacking it would be really difficult to get him a sharer. However I've answered several adverts with my 5yr old IDxWB in mind, she's 15.3 green and not even started jumping yet but is very safe and sensible, no bucking etc. But each time I've answered an advert the horse they all seem to want is my cob! I'm not really ready to trust anyone else with him yet but I've had people offer me silly money (£20 a day) to take him for a walk around the block! Yet nobody seems to be interested in a really lovely genuine youngster who isn't ever going anywhere and they could compete on! I don't get it!

HT7, tiz a problem dahn sahf  I'm a stroll along the coast from you and can't find anyone to assist  My gees don't have any issues apart from needing some schooling and getting out there competing

PaddyM, pleeeeeeeze move down 'ere mate! :D

I have been looking for something challenging over summer that I could potentially go out and compete (after all the ground work of course) and have found absolutely nothing. Having the opposite problem, plenty of small cobby riding school types around for share but nothing with potential. So if anyone near Edinburgh has something!

I would have thought there were a few people in my position (students) that would be happy to put in the work and do some stable work etc just to be able to keep riding whilst at university.

She would stay at my yard with the other 2, would consider letting her go locally, but it's not a case of I want someone to do the hardwork, it's a case of finding someone who wants something that they can go out and do stuff with if they wish! Guess I thought there were more peeps like myself who would want a horse that they could have fun on, and work with! I would want them to treat my horses as if they were there own, I'm pretty much Ok with them doing whatever they want with her (within reason), I'm just struggling to keep both TB's in exercise. She needs someone who is a quiet, confident rider, not a novice. And yes, as some of you said, the amount of timewasters out there is ridonkulous! I did have a 13yo, who was paying to ride, she basically did as she wanted with the horse, I took her out XC training etc, she loved it, learnt loads, loved the horse as if it were her own, and rode the other 2 aswell if she fancied a change. She rode for approx 2 years, and it was a great agreement, sadly it came to an end. Please don't insinuate that I'm just trying to get someone to do the hardwork part, that's not it at all, I'd happily have sharers for the other 2 as an option, but 1 is crippled and undergoing tests, and the other one I want to focus on a bit more myself.

I have been looking to share a horse in the hants/surrey/berskshire area for absolutely ages!

IME the owners seem to whip the horses or ponys away just as you've started to bond :( I would love to get my own finally after 7 years but really can't afford it.

If anyone is looking for a sharer in those areas please PM me ;) :)

I think there are difficulties on both sides - I can understand why people in your position wouldn't want to actually say in an advert that they don't want any money - More chance of nobheads.

I can also understand people being hesitant to work on someone elses horse if they think they have to pay money for it. I recently contacted a woman advertising 'loan with view to buy' and she came across as exactly the type who wants to loan her horse out, get all the hard work done and then sell it for a decent price - Despite the fact she wouldn't have paid for the horse for at least a year.

I was looking for the same thing said I had a challenging horse that needed bringing on. Only got enquiries from people that had been out of riding for a while or said they had done this that and the other but couldn't ride either side of him... So I gave up looking

Right! It's sorted, you all move to Edinburgh :D. I have the exact opposite problem! I'm not a novice, but I'm not amazingly experienced with horses and I've had shares in the past and worked in riding schools and been left with the overall care of the horses and I've been trying to find a more challenging share that can bring me on, but that I can also help to bring on as well. And guess what. I can't find anything. All the horses here are like happy hackers etc. and you don't have the chance to help bring on a youngster. I think another problem seems to be money as well and also the fact that most people I've contacted have given me a massive list of instructions that are very limited to what you can actually do with the horse. I'm hoping to find something in the near future! I don't even care if I can't find a youngster, just something that is more of a challenge for me so that we can advance together :). I hope everyone can find someone close to them who is excellent!

I have always loved trouble horses, more fun and as long as owner does not mind me face planting when people are watching (bad habit of mine). The only thing i ever stated was that if the owner wanted me to have lessons they had to pay. Alot of people seem to want lessons regualy for horses, i dont mind lessons but refuse to hvae them twice a week for your horse. If anybody needs a rider in essex i have 4 months free and only 2 horses much more time to ride avaliable.
