I share a lovely mare. She is a bombproof hacking queen, but apart from that she is virtually unschooled and hears "jumping" as "an opportunity to kill the rider"... however I am working on improving the last two things.

I started the share at the beginning of November last year. I pay £40 a month and £17.50 every time she is shod so on average it is about £50 a month. This used to be for 3 days a week (including sundays), I did all her jobs on those days and also turned out and brought in the owners other youngster at the same time.

Now I am in that loooong gap between 6th form and university, I have Ellie every single day, but still pay the same. I can do literally whatever I like with her, I am almost certain that if I wanted to train her to be a jousting horse I could and her owner would be delighted that I was doing something cool with her horse!

I still check on the youngster and I can do anything I like with her horsecare wise, she too is a lovely (if dopey and daft) horse so I often groom or bathe her too.

For me it is perfect, I am fully trusted and basically have 1.5 horses of my own, for the grand total of £50 a month

Someone shares mine and pays £20 a week which covers field rent and half cost of shoes. As my field rent is cheap, she gets her 3 days a week and sometimes 4 if she wants to, i work weekdays so it works well. She can do whatever she wants with her only thing i ask is she poo picks when im away or once a week if im not around.

I shared a horse and I paid half the cost of the basics for the horse per week which was £28 then I bought her bits and bobs that I needed (I did jumping with her so bought her tendon boots) and paid my own show entry fees but I ended up looking after/riding her 5 days a week for the same cost which worked out well for me! Her owner was short on time and also a bit on money so the arrangement worked for both of us.

Then at uni I was riding someones youngster that was very spooky, and had chucked her off and injured her, I rode him for free as I was doing her a favour getting him out and trying to desensitise him and also keeping him schooled and in work. She paid for everything, including my petrol money to and from the yard, lessons for me on the horse and all show entries.

So I guess if the sharer is helping you out with schooling the horse or keeping him fit etc I wouldn't ask for money but if the horse isn't going to be improving from the extra riding and its just for her enjoyment I think £5 per day is very reasonable

I had a sharer who had 3 days a week (including both weekend days) and i did all the mucking out etc so she just turned up, groomed and rode. I didnt need the help with the time, just the money. She paid £150 a month which i think was reasonable given that my horse is a nice well schooled all rounder so its not like she was bringing him on or anything for me, she had the weekends and i only got to ride after work in the dark, and livery is pretty expensive round here. They certainly were more than happy to pay that, and i know of far more expensive shares than that in this area.

However, if you dont need the help with the money then a small contribution is fine. also like mentioned if she is bringing on your horse for you then she is doing you a favour. £5 a week is nothing!! She's a lucky girl
