how much do you pay and what do you get for that? i'm really struggling to pay for 2 horses and struggling time-wise too. i'd decided to sell one of my horses but i really don't think i can do it- i get really upset everytime i think about it...my dad thinks i'm being soft but i've sold other horses before without being like this so i think its this horse in particular that is very special to me

anyway, i thought i'd try and find a new sharer for him/ put him on part loan. i used to have a sharer but it was an informal arrangement and this time i'd like a proper agreement drawing up etc etc.... so ideas much appreciated!

My sharer pays £70 (half of my livery) for a full half share of my horse, she gets to do everything she likes with him.

when mins was on loan to two excellent girls they paid £20 each a week and they could do whatever they wanted with her so long as they ran it past me 1st but they were brilliant never had to worry about her or them at all...they basically paid half her livery each at £20/wk i paid the rest.
 
A couple of months ago I started riding a lovely horse owned by a lovely and very generous lady!

Readng through this thread I feel bad as I don't pay anything towards him

Lovely lady works odd shifts which means some weeks she has lots of time to do the horse and others not much time at all, so I ride on the days she can't and I muck out and feed etc on the days I ride... I think it works well for us because I was after a horse to ride and she is pleased to have a break- although I have to be honest the 'money issue' has never been raised

With sharing you need to be careful! There is a definate difference between loaning and sharing. I loaned my mare to someone, thinking I was going to get two days a week's use, but the person who had her got all funny and said that she was paying for the keep therefore she was riding her. This was in spite of me offering to pay for my share of shoes, feed, or whatever. It was awful and I wouldn't ever do it again. I'd made very sure that we were signing a "sharer" agreement rather than a "loan" one.

I have a lovely lady who rides my lad twice a week.

She pays £10 a ride. She usually has a lesson on him and then hacks him or whatever she wants really within reason.

I have had a load of people who have shared my lad and it has always ended babdly. One lady owed us over £100 and another lady just dissapeared etc the list goes on.

It works for me and my lad seems happy in himself, and it gives me some time to do something else most likely school work. . .fun, fun, fun lol.
 
so if i was working on my livery being £40 a week and shoes being £80 every 5 weeks does £35 a week sound too much? would someone pay that? i figure that would help pay towards livery, shoes, insurance, feed? in return they could have horse 4x days a week (they could pick days) and have lessons or hacking or whatever they wanted. if they were competent i wouldn't even mind if they wanted to come xc schooling / competing with me or whatever....does this sound reasonable or not? i'd rather know before i put out an advert so feel free to say either way!

gosh she's getting a great deal! the last sharer i had helped me a lot with my other horse- mucking out etc- but i think i'd like new sharer to just be involved with the one horse- that way the boundaries are really clear for everyone? i think £35 is ok- i bet its not much less to have 1 hour lesson in a RS?!

I used to pay £110/month for 3-4 days per week, had the horse to myself on my days and did mucking out/feeding/rug change on my days too (which I didn't mind doing!). Eventually I stopped the share because due to many problems (horse wouldn't hack alone, absolute arse to catch so couldn't ride on some of my days, owner didn't arrange farrier until horse lost a shoe and then farrier wouldn't come out for 2wks... so I was paying for a horse I couldn't ride) and was costing way too much money.
 
I pay 20 a week and do the jobs for the 2 i share and sometimes the other 2. I also do odd jobs like poo picking on my days. The other sharers pay 25 though but 20 was my very max i could afford and their owner luckily liked me enough to let me do it for that. I will also be paying for 1x wormer whenever they are done but it barely counts it's that little, and i pay 30 for shoes every 6 weeks.

I could ride every day if i wanted but with uni i can only do 3. It's a good deal. I think 20-25 a week and half of shoes is very reasonable. I'm sure you will find someone lovely for your gorgeous lad. (if i wasn't at uni and didn't already have my lovely shares i would be snapping your hand off big time!)
 
If you are flexible about days and the rider can compete then yes I would say you would find someone for £35 a week as you are offering something more than the average share - where people don't get a chance to compete because the owner normally wants to.

Before I got my pony I paid £30 for 3 days but that was three years ago and I got both weekend days plus a week day and was allowed to compete and have lesson and also I used to look after the horse when the owner went on their holidays.

There are quite a few sharers at my yard - some don't pay anything as the owner needs someone to help them and if they did not have a sharer would have to pay YO for help - others are more like part loans where they pay half the costs.
 
thanks folks. i'm gonna do an ad now...and put it at £35- i'll emphasize that this includes livery and shoes... as i have a 4 year old as well i'm not bothered what days sharer has (they can have saturday AND sunday if they want

) and they can compete if they want- he needs a bit of work before he can go out competing (not done much for 3 years) but he's just rusty, he's quite capable. they'd have to sort out transport but if i was free or going anyway, they'd be able to cadge a lift with me no problem....

The only problem at the moment is the time of year- it's a lot easier to get a sharer in the summer!
I'd be prepared to lower the price slightly if I were you as well as share's generally are £30 or less. I'm loosing my sharer and not had any replies to add yet (add doesn't even mention price of share) and I'm offering chance to compete, hack etc.

Mine can do whatever she wants on her days, she pays £15 a week for a 2 day share and does his jobs on her days. But at home (am at uni at the moment) the going rate is £25 a week for two days, that is near london where everything is more expensive though!
 
I was in same situation had 2 but didint really have time for them both as 1 is a youngster, but couldnt sell either! I have just found a sharer on yours2share.co.uk, i put an ad on there and had a reply within less than 24 hours!
 
I've shared twice and never paid anything as the owners have needed the help, but £35 a week doesn't sound too bad for what you are offering, although what sort of work would they be expected to do? If they were going to have full livery then that is fine but if they will be expected to do quite a bit of care then it might be a bit steep.

I'd suggest that it might be worth accepting a bit less for the right person if £35 is too high for them. It would be great to find someone who is up to actually bringing your horse back up to competitive level and maybe even competing him, rather than someone is more novice and needs more supervision. It is also most important to find someone who will stick with it!

I'd recommend that you make sure you are both clear on what is expected and what the boundaries are too as that is the most common reason for shares failing.

in terms of jobs i'm actually not that bothered. the horse is on DIY but i do all the jobs myself at the moment so if they want to do jobs then they are more than welcome (i know some sharers like to do this so it feels more like 'their' horse) but i can do them if they don't want to
