So, I am potentially looking for a sharer but I have NEVER done this before.

I don't even know if anyone would want to share her. She is a 15 year old 16.1hh DWB. She is amazing on the ground, but can stress under saddle. She needs a confident, balanced, sympathetic, light rider and she can be sharp. Doesn't buck/rear/nap etc.

How do I go about this? I don't ride her as I am too heavy (working on it) and she has been out of work for a few years (my fault not hers, I got fat). But this does mean that whoever clicks with her could ride whatever days they want including weekends. When fit she will jump the moon, well schooled and is a fun ride.

I'd be happy to do it in exchange for them just sorting her out that day i.e bring in and sort her stable in winter. In summer just giving her a small feed with her suppliments in. No financial contribution wanted.

Is this achievable or should I just not bother as I am worried that if someone gets on her and upsets her it will take a few days to get her to relax under saddle again. (she is very sensative)

I do have a girl that will come and ride her a few times to get her going and ride for potential viewers but this isn't something she can do long term as she has her own projects.

Do you put a contract in place? Where do you advertise? How do you advertise? Should I put a price up to avoid any less than serious enquiries?

We have a sharer for my mums mare.

We asked for a small contribution as you will weed out the ones who are just in it short term.

We also have a contract in place that states the amount she pays every month and that if things are damaged as a result of her being careless then she replaces them. Also states her responsibilities and days that she comes up.

Shes a 15 year old girl but the agreement is with her dad.

Thank you :)

Yes a good idea, as much as my tack and stuff isn't hugely valuable I still don't fancy replacing them through someone elses carelessness. Definately something I hadn't thought of.

I think it would be worth a go, if it works, you'll get your horse back in work and going nicely, and I'm sure you'd love to see that :)

I'd also ask for a contribution, even if it's just towards feed or shoes, doesn't have to be huge.

Definitely get a contract in place. I'd just alter the BHS loan agreement if I was you :)

Yes there are people that would want her. This is the sort of ride I generally look for.
Advertise on preloved, equine adverts etc. Be prepared for a lot of unsuitable responses.
Generally I would not put a cost in the advert, the sort of person you need for this horse probably wont be prepared to pay and you could miss out on the right person.
We are out there, just finding us can be a bit of luck.

Thank you! Yes I would love nothing more than to see my girl going and doing something! Tbh I could even arrange transport for competitions if thats what the person wanted. She does have a muscle tear in her hindquater so huge jumps may not be an option but for someone wanting a low level type she's perfect.

I will definately get a contract in place - I just hope the right type of person comes to see her. As I said she is very sharp and can be quirky (not nasty!). I may say Over 18's only as she is quirky...

She is barefoot as out of work so I may say that Sharer pays for shoes? (She will need them once in work).

That fills me with a bit more hope!!!

From my point of view, if they gel with her and can ride one side of her they have a bargain. All the fun of a well schooled, well bred horse and no real financial strings. I don't ride her so I am very flexible on days!

There will definitely be someone out there for her :)
I advertised my own mare for a sharer on Preloved and Facebook, she's injured at the moment, but I have a couple of people interested in her.
She is green and easily stressed under saddle, so like you, I am looking for the right type of rider for her, to not upset her.

Most Definitely and if you were closer I would tear your arm off!

From my point of view put everything in writing down to routines ect it save a lot of heart ache and misunderstanding later on.

Yes thats my other issue - I am right on the Cumbria/Scottish border (north of Carlisle) so its not an easy place to get to as there isn't a bus route and for the area there are very few yards even so location wise I am not sure how much interest I would get.

I would snap your horse up if I were near you (Sadly live all the way in North London).
I am an experienced rider without a horse currently. I would love to share a horse like yours. So I think you should be able to find someone, you just may have to sift through the unsuitable people.

As an experienced ride and sharer I would only want to pay a small fee, or muck out instead. I don't really want to pay to help bring on someones naughty pony or youngster when really they should be paying a professional to do it. So I tend to ignore any adverts that ask for a large amount of money per month (as stated by someone else this does mean you could miss out on someone suitable), or sometimes send a message asking if the owner would consider a different arrangement. I also have a very low paying job and just cannot afford most share prices, hence why I am also not able to buy my own.

Maybe advertise with a small asking price but say that the right rider is more important? Definitely draw up a contract.
When I search for share horses I tend to use local facebook groups, preloved and equineadverts.co.uk
I have also looked at tack shop notice boards and notice boards at local yards but tend to find most people advertise online now.

To be honest, I'd be happy for any sharer to just do the yard chores on "their" days if that makes sense?

I know my horse is quirky so I'd cry tears of joy if I found someone else who could ride her or sit quietly enough to let her calm down and get used to someone else. When I've let other people on her in the last 6 years and she has either cantered in circles or coiled up to about an inch long. :o

Agree with this, flexibility is good, and recognising what benefits your horse offers against what benefits the sharer offers you and your horse.

I have two competition horses / are also elementary - medium school masters and decent hacking horses / one is older and needs a bit more structured work and warm up.

I require a monthly contribution to costs for two weekdays riding, and occasional weekend riding.

I offer the option for the right person to exchange the cost element, for doing chores one end of the day, for both horses, on their two weekday riding days.

I currently have one sharer that does chores, and one that pays a monthly fee.

I’d love an arrangement with a body worker, for treatment for riding, if I could find one :-)

I am the main rider and schooling person for both my horses, and the sharers are subsidiary, less schooling experienced riders in my arrangement.

But it could easily be the other way round, as per this thread.

That said I have had a few average riders, that were nice enough riders, but not as effective at schooling as me, AND didn't want to pay, or offer fixed days for chores. I can school my own horses, I don't have time for the free-riders, there does need to be a benefit for me in cost or chores, as well as having horse exercised. Else I am mucking out at 6am, paying all costs and they are riding decent trained horses for free, at their convenience!

Some areas are better than others for finding a sharer. I have tried in vain to find one to ride my, admittedly quirky so not for a novice, chunky 14.2. I don't want any financial contribution & would be happy to take them to shows etc.
