I'm thinking of getting a sharer for Prince for various reasons so a few questions...

Do you just have a verbal agreement or written, do you just adapt it over time and to suit summer and winter routines?

Do you get jealous of someone else riding your horse?

Do they do stable duties or just ride -what do people generally prefer?

Anything that I'm likely to forget that should go in an ad?

Thanks :)

Im a sharer!

We have a verabl agreement, but I dont think having a written one is a bad idea.
Yes we adapt to suit each other over the seasons
I do all stable chores/poo pick- but then I dont mind doing it, some i imagine, if they were paying wouldnt want to do them.
look on newrider.com- thats where my share horses owners found me!

I have had a couple of shares. With the first one i had a written a agreement but after that the others have just been verbal (they have all been at the same yard so maybe people just decided i am trustworthy?!). I think a written agreement is a good idea, some people modify the BHS loaning agreement.

In each case I have paid for the share (not very much though) and done stable duties too. I quite like doing the stable duties but I suppose some people wouldn't!

Hope you find someone suitable.

Thanks. That's useful to know. I've looked at new rider but can't see anyone on the wanted in Kent. Think i might look at putting an ad up though. x

I have a sharer for my horse. We have a written agreement, adapted from the BHS full loan thingy.
She does stables duties/poo picking and rides 2 days a week.
Most sharers i have come across and when i was sharer prefer to have the stable duties too, you learn as you go and you get to have a good chat with everyone whilst doing it and become part of the yard

I suppose technically I'm a sharer, I do no stable chores (there are none) but I would if asked and I'd help with field maintenance if asked. I'm the only rider so not got to fit in around someone else and I do as much as I can.

We have a verbal agreement too.

I have shared with and without, if its someone you don't know its better with. No adapting for winter & summer, my contracts when I had them were along the lines of help with stable duties when I was there, I was to be there a minimum of 2-3 days a week (max of 7, I was lucky enough to share 2 horses so we could both ride everyday if we wished) and riding wasn't a problem since there was always an indoor school.

Do you get jealous of someone else riding your horse?
I think I would, even though I've been the sharer :o I think it depends on you. I have had horse owners who I have suspected have been jealous, but they/we have been sensible and respectful and its still worked out.

Do they do stable duties or just ride -what do people generally prefer?
Having tried to find a sharer for a lovely but very green cob, I and his owner have found that the people who aren't willing to at least do some stable duties then they aren't that committed to riding regularly or doing things in the horse's best interest. As a sharer I do whatever jobs need doing while I'm there - be it mucking out (owner would turn out in morning) or cleaning tack, sweeping yard, and OBVIOUSLY bringing in/out/tacking up etc (I say obviously like that because we had one who reckoned she was too busy, what with having a part-time job and all, so would expect the horse in & ready, otherwise she didn't have time to ride by the time she had turned up 1/2 hr late  if she did ride she's sod off and leave me (who wasn't the owner nor groom) to untack, clean off, feed and turn him back out!)

Do any of you compete your share horse?

What do you do regarding insurance, do you have your own rider insurance?

I definately wouldn't want that!! I'd like someone who is truely interested in Prince and not just riding. I like doing the stable duties so thats not a huge issue but i'd like someone who actually wants to spend time with him in terms of grooming and fussing, not someone who just drags him in and dumps him back out once they've ridden! He really loves people and cuddles so i'd want someone to actually bond with him i think.

Do any of you compete your share horse?

What do you do regarding insurance, do you have your own rider insurance?

When i shared i didnt have my own insurance or anything, and competed regularly on my own without the owner there.
My sharer doesnt have personal insurance. She can compete if she wanted but i would want to be there too...as i would most likely compete him too.

I think you just have to have a chat with your potential sharers and see what they and you want out of the share.

I don't have rider insurance but regretting it since my fall so I'd insist on it tbh!

I'm free to do what i want comp wise and was meant to be going to camp but again I don't share riding so its a bit different.

I've been a sharer a couple of times, and have never had a written agreement. Having said that, I do think a written agreement is a good idea because it makes you put in stone important things such as who is responsible for vets fees and other costs etc. in the event that the horse is injured while in sharer's care, and whether the sharer is responsible for replacing tack etc they damage/lose. Better to agree this sort of stuff up front I think, to avoid tears later.

I also think it is very very important that the sharer has their own rider's insurance. If they have an accident on the road involving, say, the injury of your horse, injury of people, or damage of property, you would want to know you could cover the costs (even if you think your horse insurance would pay - it might not if sharer deemed negligent, for example).

Having been all doom and gloom, I should say that sharing can work out brilliantly for both sharer and owner - it has in my experience! You just need to be really clear about who is responsible for what and, above all, find someone you feel you can trust so that you do not feel the need to be peering over their shoulder the whole time.

Oh, and you asked about stable duties. I agree with the poster above who said that people who help out with chorse are more likely to be invested in the health and wellbeing of your horse. Not sure why I think this, but I do.

Good luck!

Do you just have a verbal agreement or written, do you just adapt it over time and to suit summer and winter routines? i have had both in the past but at the moment i have a verbal agreement and because i am easy going about it there hasn't been a problem yet

Do you get jealous of someone else riding your horse? i did but now i love seeing her improve because my lad is so calm and steady (but still makes her work at the same time)

Do they do stable duties or just ride -what do people generally prefer? (we do a bit of both as they are out 24/7 she is responsible for making sure he is groomed and exercised on her days and helps with a bit of poo picking come winter she will either muck out or do the poo picking)

Anything that I'm likely to forget that should go in an ad? not for the ad but make sure you have them back to ride him in different situations before allowing them to start sharing. i had mine ride in the field (didn't have a school at the time) hack out alone with me on foot and in company then when we were both happy they started paying.

I'm a sharer - have had three shares over the last five years.

Do you just have a verbal agreement or written, do you just adapt it over time and to suit summer and winter routines?
>>For my first share I had a written agreement that covered the money and time, and what would happen should I injure the horse! My last two have been via word of mouth so verbal agreement only (and pretty sketchy at that!). The second share was with two v nice ladies who had three between them at a private yard, so we all rode together and did things together - it was great and lasted over three years, until one of the horses was retired. But you have to get along pretty well for this to work - I was friends with one of the owners before I started sharing with them and still help out at the w/ends, tho not 'officially' sharing anymore.

Do you get jealous of someone else riding your horse?
>>Can't really comment, tho I was the better flatwork rider in my first two shares (I don't want to sound full of myself, but it's worth bringing up as this can potentially be an issue) and the owners were always very gracious and encouraged me to school as well as hack/jump (their main interests). My current owner doesn't want to compete but is happy for me to do some comps and comes along to support/video/stuff with polos.

Do they do stable duties or just ride -what do people generally prefer?
>>First and current shares were full livery and middle one was a private yard in which we all mucked in with grooming and cleaning tack, and I did all the pulling/trimming/clipping/plaiting. I do clean tack, groom, wash down and skip out now as the current full livery's not as 'full' as you might expect...! I would feel dreadfully guilty doing nothing but riding and have the piss taken at my current yard - I'm the one who does all that body brushing... Anyway, I like it. How can you not like all the faffing around that goes with riding?

Anything that I'm likely to forget that should go in an ad?
>>I would second what LadyRacasse said here. And would also like to know how to get red text when replying! :-) It's my first post on the new forum after a pretty long break and it's all shiny and scary!

I'm a sharer in the sense that Blue belongs to the YO and i have him on part loan along with another lady (who originally had him on full loan)

Do you just have a verbal agreement or written, do you just adapt it over time and to suit summer and winter routines?
We don't have an agreement , but we do have a semi routine, my sharer comes up at weekends and one weekday (usually a tue or wed) we haven't done a winter yet, but the only change i can really see being is her maybe cutting out her weekday, I have to be up everyday anyway for Herc.

Saying that I do think a written agreement may be useful, especially if you do not know the person. Just so you know where you both stand.

Do you get jealous of someone else riding your horse?
Not really. In fact I usually hack Herc out with her on the days that she rides. But i've never had a horse totally to myself so i'm used to it.

Do they do stable duties or just ride -what do people generally prefer?
She just rides. But then her half of the Loan is for full livery, while mine is for DIY, so I do all the mucking out etc, but again, i'm not too fussed (tho there are days i cba as he's a mucky lil s***) as (again) i have to be up to sort Herc anyway

Anything that I'm likely to forget that should go in an ad?
Erm.....Age, hight, sex, colour. Type of ride, anything he can't do (just so you don't get the 'can he....? No. Oh, never mind' convos) What your looking for (ie days contributions etc)

Thanks :)

I shared a mare for just under a year. We had a written agreement based on the bhs loan contract, edited in bits about who was to pay if the horse needed vet treatment (owner for everything apart from if the sharer's negligence caused injury), who was responsible for shoeing the horse etc.

I have rider insurance with petplan, think it's pretty vital to have if you are riding other peoples' horses.

On the days I had the horse I did all stable duties, kind of backfired on me as the owner often only skipped out on her days and left me with a disgusting straw bed to muck out on my days.

I've shared for 8 years nearly now and I'm more a friend than a sharer to the owner now!! I ride her other horse now too when she's at work and I go to the farm every day (I started out 2 days a week) and I don't pay (but I try and buy feed etc before she does!! :p just to give something) I do all stable duties and I'll also offer to do other mare too if I know G is busy with work, it doesn't bother me.
I compete Kelly regularly (well I will do once she's recovered) and I regularly competed Rebel (1st p/loan pony) too. I have rider insurance meaning I am covered when I'm riding and Kelly is also covered whilst in my care (and I think any other horse)
We had a verbal agreement, but never a written one but now its as and when I want to go down :)
Now G has got other horse too (while her daughter works) we can both ride out together and sometimes we swap so G can ride Kelly as much as I do.

I have a sharer who works at the yard where I keep my horse. There are no stable duties as horse is on Full, but sharer works there anyway. Sharing only came about as was made redundant so had to cut down on costs and originally had written agreement but has now lapsed into verbal one now that I trust her more. She is lovely, and loves my horse, but I'd rather not have to do it

well nobody shares my horse but a friend did come up to rode him and shes not very exp but she wouldnt let me lead her or anything so i let her go and she fell off and blamed my pony when he did nothing worng! also she put a pic of her riding him as her msn pic and it loked like e was her own horse that really bugged me and i didn lie it at all :( hope this helps about the jelous bit :)
