Hi guys, I just wanted to ask some advice RE sharing. I'm having to find a sharer for Louis just to help with costs etc and wondered what is normal to charge? The sharer will do three times a week. I was thinking around £12 / ride e.g. 36 a week? I'm stabled just outside the London area on part livery so costs aren't cheap.

Thanks

just to add, he's competing Medium Aff dressage and there is opportunity to compete. He also jumps, XC etc

I share mine 3 times a week and pay £15 a week but to be fair that's in Norfolk lol where it's a lot cheaper. I think £36 a week is definately reasonable as i was paying £25 a week for an hour lesson at my local RS before i got my share horse so yes £36 a week is reasonable, especially if there's a chance to compete!
Hope you find someone :-)

I used to work out what my daily costs for the horse were and then multiply by the days the sharer would do. In London I was asking something like £30-£35 for 3 days so sounds like you are within normal range especially if you can offer such a well-trained horse and lots to do with him. Think of how expensive it would be to take a lesson! Good luck!

PS I was always surprised to see how many people I got enquiring and would think it would be too much money but when you look at lesson prices and the real cost of a horse it is rather a bargain but a lot of people want things for free, it always drove me up the wall...

I never used to charge my sharers-they would muck out in return for riding. To be honest they were doing me a favour, so if anything I should have paid them!

thanks guys that's very helpful. UKa thanks, I was worried it's too much but I also did it by working out daily costs and around us 30 is normal for lesson and considering he's a perfect dressage schoolmaster, it's a good deal

I think that is more than fair! My sharer pays £20 per week for Monty and she can ride every day if she wants as she is his sole rider, but we have no facilities at all, not even a school.

Can I be your sharer!!!!

I've just started paying 20 pounds/week and half of (front only) shoes in a similarly priced area for 3 days/week (but we're both flexible). Horsey does SJ/XC/Dressage locally (although not yet with me) and we have school, hacking & access to gallops. He lives out atm so really all I have to do is turn up, brush off, ride, bath, sunscreen & flyspray. Fed only when on winter grazing.

20-25/week depending on shoes being included was about average when I was looking over the last couple of months. Some wanted a similar amount but horses lived in and needed chores doing so I guess if yours is in but you pay for chores that might be OK.

I pay for occasional lessons (30 pounds/hour) so the comparison with RS needs to account for that too.

To be honest it put me off when people thought that you should pay /exactly/ in proportion to time because obviously you don't get to make the decisions about horsey and s/he is never going to be yours.

I do feel very lucky to have 'my' little man!

Totally agree with this. It also depends on how many chores the sharer will be expected to do........ if you will expect her to poo pick/muckout then consider reducing the costs, if it is all done then potentially you could raise them slightly.,....... I pay £50pcm, and usually ride twice a week, although I could ride every day if I wanted to,........ I am extremely lucky with that tho!!

Hi. My sharer has my boy 3 days a week and pays £20 a week. I wanted to up it by £3.00 a week to £100 per month in total allowing her the option of another day per week thus covering my livery - this is what another sharer pays and she has her share horse for 4 days a week. This is in West Sussex at a yard with lots of hacking and an outdoor school and small indoor school.

when i had sharers (2years ago) they paid £25 pw they had a choice of 3days a week and had sole use of him for there days and i didn't go down unless they asked me. the one thing i can't stand with owners when sharing is interfering owners. you need someone you can trust 110% other wise its not worth the hassle. i am a fussy owner but both my sharers excepted that infact my last share was more fussy than me about my boy which i really liked.
