This is driving me up the wall, but before I say something to the person involved I wouldn't mind a spot check that I'm not being ureasnoble!

Basically, I'm on a livery yard, all the liveries supply their own stuff for their horses/mucking out etc. I am v up tight about putting all my stuff away clean, certain brushes for certain uses etc. But since I buy them, and I don't expect anyone else to do my horse then I reckon I can just go right ahead being so uptight?!

Problem arrises in that someone else on the yard keeps using my stable brush (the yard is often wet and muddy so I have a broom for that, and a sweepy brush for stables) outside in the mud/muck/wet etc. It is driving me insane! My nice clean brush is now covered in crap! To add to it, someone has rooted through my tack box and used my trimmers, flattened the battery and then just left the lot out. Nicked my dandy brush and sponge to clean up with and then left them on the floor. I was esp annoyed as I was clipping my mare that day and so had left everything charged and clean and ready to go! Urghhh!

I don't want anyone using my stuff really, it is mine, I have to buy it, and I expect to find it where I left in, in the condition I left it. I don't mind people using my outside broom as tbf you'd really have to go some to break it or wear it out! But how do I say 'that is an indoor brush, please don't use it' without sounding like a proper uptight cow who won't share?!

(promise this isn't a troll post, I really do need to get a life, but I just like my stuff kept nicely!)

I'd say it as you wrote it - if someone borrows your stuff, uses it correctly and replaces it in a condition that you wouldn't notice it had been borrowed, that's cool, but if borrowed and used for the wrong purpose/damaged I'd be going mad and I'm a scatty, untidy mare at the best of times!!x

Unfortunatly not - they are large rooms that we use to store our stuff. Never been a problem before as people respected other peoples stuff!

People often borrow my stuff and I don't mind provided it is put back (as found), but Geez if they borrowed my clippers without asking I would go nuts, Would not expect anyone to use my grooming brushes or sponge for any reason.

can you lock the things you don't want to have borrowed somewhere?
You have to put a stop to this, I find that if you make it slightly difficult to use stuff they will go elsewhere, but to be honest no one should use your stuff esp clippers or horse brushes.
Ask the YO to sort this out, I have no doubt she knows the culprit.
In the past, I put a large paper notice inside my feedbin, I also named the thief on this paper, and guess what, she never spoke to me again!!!
I have just lost my second haynet which was hanging outside my stable, the person took it as they left the yard, but I know who it was, no doubt they had had a pink haynet, but they took mine!
There is nothing to stop you posting a notice near your stuff explaining all that you said in your posting. I use a permanent marker for everything and buy stuff that is different from anything else.

then buy a large box to keep in that room that you can lock, and lock as much as possible away in it. I know you can't lock away brushes, but do as I do and mark each one (with paint or electrical tape) so everybody knows they are yours and put them out of sight each day

It's your stuff and you can be as precious as you want about it ;)

Seriously though, it would annoy me too - especially your trimmers, and actually the brush would probably pee me off too. I have no problem with people borrowing my stuff, as long as it gets returned in the same condition. Although saying that, I wouldn't dream of going through someone's grooming / storage box without asking permission first.

If you don't want confrontation, can you paint "yard" onto the yard brush and "stable" on the indoor brush? Then if that doesn't work, it may at least make it easier to speak to the person about it.

or you could just break all their fingers, so they never use a broom again:D

LOL! It would annoy me too...annoyed me so much we are no longer on a livery yard as even when we privately rented a field on a farm with other liveries things went walkies or were used and put back either broken or in worse condition than when they were borrowed. Like the idea of writing on the broom, how about one of those lockable tack boxes for your brushes/clippers?

This sort of thing really does annoy me!!! Over the years I've 'lost' ££££'s worth of stuff.

I've had a few people helping themselves to my feed balancer, so many in fact that I was going though a bag for 1 horse every 10days!
Had my shavings bales taken,
My rugs put on other people's horses as there's was wet
Brushes taken
Wheelbarrow taken
Water buckets gone
Etc etc etc, the list is pretty much endless.

I always put my stuff away and don't leave anything by the stable, so people must go looking for it:mad:

I've resorted to making all my stuff in the back of my disco, thankfully it's got a huge boot!

And my mucking out tools I put the furthest away from the store so it's a pain for people to use them, and guess what they now don't get used. However the ones first in line regularly gets broken, lost, left dirty.

I wouldn't mine anyone using my stuff if they asked 1st so I know who is using it, then if it comes back broken or dirty I know who's accountable, to go and take someones trimmers out of there storeage box then leave them dirty is a damn cheek in my opinion, and trimmers and clippers are far more expensive than a broom, why can't people buy there own stuff and stick to that!

i'd be really peed off if someone use ANY of my grooming stuff or any of my rugs. yes i might occassionaly share with my best m8 at the yard, like a sweat scraper or something BUT she asks first, and then makes sure its clean and puts it back in the correct place!
we share the feeds but only because she has 3 horses and i have 1, all kept next to eachother so i buy every 4th bag and it works for us, we did have a lady who helped herself to my horses breathing supplement, big tub lasted us 3 weeks normaly, it then started lasting us 10days, and my horse does have quite bad copd, she got the stable in the doorway and no straw or dust making things next to her, so the lady knew that my ponio has it bad but she still thought its a good idea to take some for her anyway  i'm only at school still and i really can't afford a tub of medicine every 10 days that costs £40! she stopped when me and friend were talking loudly about how weird it is that the tub was in the middle of the feed room and that we didnt leave it there, some of it seems to be gone, why would anyone want it its only my horse and her pony that have any problems, think she heard it and got the idea :)

I have this issue where I am currently, my horse was allergic to straw (sadly he was pts just over a month ago) and all my implements were marked do not use for straw, and ppl kept using them for straw, it drives me mental

That would make me VERY angry. Borrowing without asking's naughty but putting your horse's health at risk is unforgiveable.

I'm very sorry for your loss. How old was your boy?

for all the people which have expensive feeds etc borrowed or now i like to say stolen,

one way round, is to portion out each days supplements in an individual bag, so all you have to do is tip it in the feed. ( i know it is bit of a drag but will save money) i keep the tubs at home and about once a month bag up a months supply, you can re use the bags, no one will know what they are so can't borrow!

as for those who loose mane tail spray etc, take an old bottle, replace with water either containing crystal violet or garlic oil, that way you can see or smell the culprit :)

drill a hole in each broom, stable tool. thread a thin chain through them and paddlock all together ...... then if they want to use your broom they will also have to take what is attached to it!!! a lockable box for grooming kit and the likes should put an end to borrowing. no need to explain to anyone the culprit will get the message. really your yard owner ought to stop this behaviour as all it results in is bad feeling amonst the liveries and a tense atmosphere.

It all depends on how well you get on with the other people - I once had a similar issue at work, I got on well with the other staff but used to get really annoyed over unwashed mugs. we all had our own mug but they would all be used up and left dirty until there were no more clean ones to use - then I usually ended up washing them all! It seemed too trivial to make a big scene about it so I wrote a funny poem - about my little tin mug and all the adventures we had together and how and why it liked to be kept clean, and I stuck it on the wall. Everyone liked the poem, and got the message!

You could say

I really am a "Fuss-Pot" and it just isn't any fun,
When all my "Bits and peices" are used by everyone.
I like to keep things clean, and neatly put away,
So that they will be ready, to use another day.
Now I know that all of you, don't suffer from OCD
And it really is OK, that you're all not just like me.
It really would not be fun, if we were all so uptight,
And I am not saying, that only my way is right.
But when I buy my things, I think it is OK
For me to use and keep them, in my quirky way.
It satisfys my desire for order and calm,
And I don't think my fussiness causes too much harm.
So when my clean and tidy things, are cast into disarray
I cannot help but feel aggrieved that they are left this way.
So please would you all remember, that I'm an extra Fussy Mare,
Who likes to leave her things, all put away with care.
Please don't borrow my clippers, 'cos it leaves me very stressy,
When I get them out to use them, and find them very messy.
Likewise with my grooming kit, as I find it hard to bear,
When I want to use my dandy brush, and it isn't even there.
I have an "outdoor brush" and an "indoor brush" (I know this seems extreme)
But I like to keep them seperate, and i like to keep them clean!
So when I find my indoor brush has been used outside in the mud
My blood pressure rises, and doesn't do me any good.
So may I ask you all politely - (it's just to keep me sane)
Please indulge this Fussy Mare & don't use my stuff again!!

Like button pressed now:D:D

this is the one thing guaranteed to make my blood boil - I lock all my stuff away, with the exception of brushes and huge wheelbarrow. Luckily people are very good on our yard and put things back, but I feel better locking my stuff up before I leave as I know it is all safe.

I did put a rather snotty note up on the board once due to someone using my broom and leaving it miles away from my stable. People think twice now. I don't care if I come over as being anal about my stuff, I bought it, its mine!

These cabinets are very good http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-7318.aspx

Any one remember the poster who posted about about her new wheel barrow?

She got a new barrow and was fed up with people using it, they when put it on the roof!

Then she joked she would lock it up, they put it back on the roof put filled it with water so when she got it down it soaked her

Poor girl, it's our things, if we dont want other people using it,it's up to us.

Ohh and if you can't afford to buy a broom/barrow/fork/brush etc then you really shouldnt a horse. They are basic things needed to look after them.

(I know not every on needs a broom/fork/barrow etc if you horse lives out, or you another method. Not a go at these people:))

Wow, that is just fantastic!! Shall have OH print that out for me!

Also liking v much breaking fingers/violet in mane and tail spray ideas! I can't belive what some people have had 'borrowed' - the cheek of it!!

Glad it isn't only me that gets driven up the wall by it, to my mind borrowing is only borrowing if you ask, otherwise you are just a grubby little tea leaf. Shall def have words if it keeps happening (I know exactly who it is!).

This exactly! I hope you get it sorted soon . . . anyone caught using any of Kal's grooming stuff would feel the sharp side of my tongue . . . very lucky that I haven't experienced any of this yet - but I have had heard horror stories from fellow liveries.

Sigh.
