'sharing' on livery yards

In this day and age people just dont respect other people's belongings!!!

I would make a point personnally and make it known to everyone on the yard that "someone" has been using your stuff and that you dont mind if they ask to borrow something first rather than just go ahead and use it!:) If you've got s notice board write something on it so everyone can see.

It annoys me too as at the end of the day I dont have loads of money and what I buy I work hard for so I dont appretiate people using things and ruining them.

I used to know one of these on the previous yard I was on, always 'borrowing' other peoples stuff including brushes (but it was never her), she got caught out when she took the brush belonging to the horse in quarantine for ring worm, funnily enough it was rather obvious who had 'borrowed' the brush when her horse then developed ring worm as well, I thought it was very funny (I was younger at the time, I would now be concerned over the horse getting ring worm :) )

Am I out for revenge, Nah I'm too lazy, I'll just let Karma screw you over!!!"

It is a horrible situation that you have been put into :(

Definately postcode all your items in bright colours and write INDOOR on the broom... you could also pop up a note that your vet is coming down to check your horse as you have noticed some circular patches appearing and casually mention that you hope your equipment has not been used as it is a source of cross contamination...

At my last yard I had this all the time - constantly stuff being borrowed without asking. I don't mind anyone using my stuff at all but it would be nice to be asked and then cleaned up afterwards... I remember going down this particular yard and one of the girls was wearing my wellies! If she had said, OMG I'll go and change them, but not a word. I had to ask her "could I wear MY wellies please" I don't want other people wearing my boots and shoes thanks....just priceless!

wow, that is a cheek and a half!!!!

Lol at the ringworm girl - that will serve her right, shame for her poor horse though. That brings up pretty much the stupidest thing about the whole issue - my mare was ill a week or so ago and it took the vet a couple of days to work out why and be able to treat her. In the mean time I was v v careful not to touch any other horse or anything belonging to them and obv used only my own stuff when doing my mare. I was v open with everyone on the yard, explaining the situation and explaining the steps I was taking to ensure there was no spread (YO couldn't give a monkeys!). Disinfected everything after use etc. Stupid girl looked at me like 'how dirty is your horse to get this virus', yet still used my stuff! There is just no hope for some people!

I would get a lockable chest for my stuff, or go down the tip & get an old freezer & put a padlock on it.
If your food is being taken say to whoever you think it is, that you think rats have been in your food so you bought some rat poison & mixed it well into your food - you'll soon know if it is them by the look of horror on their face when they think they've fed their horse rat poison!
Or cover your stuff in food colouring, it'll stain their hands for a few days so again you'll soon know who it is.
Stealing really annoys me,I have have to put my hand in my pocket if I want something, so they should as well.

I'd be raging.

Im a but like you with brushes as in I have a few for different things. At first livery yard they'd always get used and they'd end up breaking >:( .

Say it like you mean it or even first, leave a note near stuff saying something like 'I know your using and breaking my stuff I expect a replacement ' kind of thing, it may send the **** up them enough to deter them. maybe theyl even crap it and leave you some money of something!

I read these and wonder why most of my horses belongings are either in the car or at home! Having said that the way my yard is arranged means that nothing is usually borrowed and if it is it is by the person that shares my tackroom so ends up back where it is supposed to be with very little trauma. Sadly it does mean that if something does acually develop legs I think I am going insane, fortunatly this is very rare.

OP I hope you can resolve the situation without too much trouble

Actually, I would be pi**ed off too. I work hard to pay for my stuff and I like to keep everything clean and tidy and there is nothing wrong with that. If I have something that somebody would like to borrow, I usually say yes. However what I don't think is right or proper is somebody using my stuff without my permission. Doesn't matter what it is.

OP, I dont think it's about you " getting a life" as you put it but about expecting people to respect you. IMO too many people either can't be bothered to look after their own equipment or just think that because somebody else has something usefull it's fair game for all.

Personally I would try and lock up as much as you can and remove the rest from temptaation. Its sad for you that it has come to this but borrowing can soon lead to thieving!
