So I've recently found myself horseless for the first time in a long time! I've had horses of my own for about five years now, but university and money commitments meant that they both had to go which was absolutely gutting :( , but i'm looking for a way back into horses when I get home for the summer.

I finish university for the summer in a few weeks (just the dreaded exams to go now), so I was thinking of looking for a horse to share. My problem would be that I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in having me! I'm a vet student, so there may be a couple of weeks that i'm away on a placement on a farm somewhere, so wouldn't be able to muck out/ride, and I'm only at home until september, so it would have to be a short term thing (although I'd be more than happy to come back when I could over xmas/easter!). I know most people looking for a rider/sharer want someone long term, so I'm expecting this to be a bit of a problem.

On the positives, I'm reasonably experienced and confident on the flat and over jumps, 'quirks' don't really bother me having ridden a slightly dappy warmblood for the past few years, I've had some experience bringing on young/inexperienced horses so wouldn't mind something that needs some work (I actually really enjoy bringing horses on, I know some people don't like the thought of paying to school someone elses horse, but I don't actually mind it!)

So do people actually look for short term sharers, or someone to help bring on a youngster/project? I know it's a bit of a long shot, but I'm not quite ready to give up on horses just yet!

Oh, and I thought I'd stick in a photo of the warmblood who I've just sold, just because he's gorgeous and I miss him already! :)

I think if you were completly honest about only being a short term sharer. Then you will be able to find a share. Perhaps someone that has a green Horse and wants someone to school it and then wants it handed back ;)

You look to be very competent and as a vet student obviously you will be sensible on the ground with horses so rather than a share, which may be difficult to find short term, try and offer to exercise for people or as you say bringing on a youngster.
There will be hunters and racehorses coming back after their breaks, maybe an event or jumping yard in your area would welcome an extra pair of hands over the rest of the season, place some ads in feed stores, tack shops and even go round to a few bigger yards and ask. Racing yards will often pay for work riders, £12 per lot near me.

Yeah I'd always be completely honest from the start, it'd be totally unfair on the owner to spring that one on them last minute! And pookie, I'm around the hampshire/berkshire borders, in between hook and fleet if that means anything to you? :)

I would totally take you up on that if you were closer.

You're exactly what I'm looking for. So yes, we are out there!

Even without asking a financial contribution I'm struggling so I suspect you'll be snapped up.

Yep, I know Hook and Fleet really well :) You're probably too far away from me though as I keep my mare in West Sussex. I can't imagine you wouldn't be snapped up but if you don't mind the distance and are stuck for something drop me a line :)

I hadn't thought of that actually, I might have a little look round for yards near me (I've got a massive thing for TBs, the dark bay in my siggy was an ex racehorse that I rode for a while and totally fell in love with, still looking for another like him!) Exercising people's horses for them would be ideal (especially seeing as my student loan/wages only go so far!), just not sure how to go about finding people looking for someone!

Such a shame, just a smidge too far to travel for me! And I definitely will :)

Yeah, I can't blame you - you're about 10 mins from me (in good traffic) and it takes me about 30 mins to get to the yard. You should be well placed for TBs there though :)

I'm at Edinburgh, just (fingers crossed) finished my third year, just waiting on one more exam result!! Where are you? Have you enjoyed it so far? :-) x

Nottingham :) I really am loving it there, dreading exams (one week left - eek!!), but I love the course :D not much time for horsey-ness though!

Best of luck, I'm sure you'll be fine!! Do you have lots of EMS to do this summer then? Yeah it's pretty full-on! Although I'm looking at getting my own horse, i tried sharing but it just made me miserable that it wasn't mine, how pathetic eh? I might look at getting a sharer from within the vet school to take a bit of pressure off, there are hundreds of horsey people that would love a couple of days to ride per week :-) x

not too much, I haven't been very good at booking it so only have a few things sorted! And it was quite sad how happy I was to look after a friends horse when she went home for a weekend, felt like being back to normal again! x

Tell me about it, looking after a horse made me realise just how much I missed having my own! Bit of advice, get as much done as you can in first year, then you'll have a glorious second year summer with nothing needing doing except riding/working/doing normal things! :-) unless notts has a different EMS system! :-) x

I think they're all the same, that sounds like a good plan, will have to try and book a few more once I've stopped stressing over exams! thanks! :) x
