Shavings beds for a box walker

Hi Everyone,

I needs some suggestions for my horse's bed . sadly the only bedding i can use is either straw or shavings.The YO won't allow people to use their own bedding she's itchy on straw and currently having a hard time on shavings getting through 3-4 bales a week at £7.50

She mixes together alot of the front of the stable and breaks the poo through the rest.I have tried deep litter it was awful I had to throw the whole thing out after a week

Would i be better making a small bed and throwing the whole lot out everyday or a really big bed to try and keep her cleaner? Oh and she's on rubber mats.

i had a tb like this and the only thing that worked was just a sprinkle on the rubber matting and sweep everything out every day. a bale of shavings lasted a week

Someone I know has sitched to a type of paper bedding. It's actually the stuff tea bags are made of. It looks clean, is very absorbent and doesn't move as much as shavings. Unfortunately, I don't know the name but I'll try and find out if you're interested.

this is kind of what i do
i have equimats and use about 3 bales to make banks and sprinkle about an inch thick every day in the middle from the banks (dirtiest parts as mine tramples some down) and chuck the middle out every day , i use about a bale a week sometimes 2 if he walks a lot ie if his friend goes out first in the morning or i sleep in ( 8.30am ) he makes more mess

Ditto this again - I used to deep litter but mats and shavings seems the best way. I use bedmax and my horse is in 24/7 at the minute (farmers orders, fields are trashed) and I use a bale a week, and my horse is a filthy pig!

ETA: I don't put banks in, as I don't believe you can get any banks worth having with shavings. I just pile all the extra bedding along the back wall

Mats and one of the heavy shavings ie laysoft or something similar as they cant move it about easily we have found works well with diggers and box walkers you cannot deep litter a box walker with anything!
