shavings - can anyone reccomend a company/type?

Almost finished our pallet of wood chips and think we want to try a shavings bed, only had our horse for 10 months so dont have much experience with brands and would appreciate any advice on quality, good value and which company to buy from.

Do you have any large feed merchants near you that you can go and have a look at various brands?
Just try and go for a bale that has the least dust.
Shavings can work out expensive and around here the cheapest is £7.40 a bale but that's a min order of a pallet (20 bales) plus delivery.
I used 1/1.5 bales a week and my lad is quite clean.

The bales we have delivered don't have any make on the bag so I can't give you a brand name but I did use Bedmax for a while but I didn't like the big flakes and they seemed quite hard and jagged, also they are nearly £9 a bale!! http://www.bedmaxshavings.com/en

I also tried Easibed which was great but they made the bags smaller and the price stayed the same but it's good if you like to deep litter. http://www.easibed.co.uk/index.htm?id=index

My ideal bed would be Nedz Bedz (chopped straw) it makes a lovely bed, soft, easy to muck out, smells nice :) but again it's over £8 a bale and I was using 1.5/2 a week. http://www.nedz.co.uk/

I'm on straw now as I find it cheap and it gives a lovely big bed but it's not the easiest to muck out and took me a while to get a routine going.

I deffo recommend going to a merchant and seeing what's available.
 
I do not have a cheaper alternative but mendip mixed with the coarser bedmax makes for a very good bed, and I have a messy boy but only take out 2 poo scoops full of wet per day.

There are other alternatives such as pellets but personally it doesnt look comfortable. My dream bed is straw but the YO does not allow it. :(
 
We found Aubiose best but it got too expensive (£11 a bag). Bliss is best alternative we've found and under £7 bag. Bedmax too sharp,as was Laysoft(not that soft!). Littlemax too powdery,as was Snowflake(thought they were sposed to be good but was like a bag of dust!).
 
Of the wood shavings we tried,Natural Flake (£7.50ish bag)seemed good and are of a consistent quality and hardly any powdery dusty stuff in bag.
 
Thank you all so much for your advice. I will definitely be looking for a local feed merchant - hadn't even considered that before - doh! I will also look at Bliss bedding. Unfortunately our horse cant have a straw bed as the last owner said he eats the stuff, shame because the other horses on our yard look so comfy and cosey with straw. We have used wood pellets for the last 10 months but it never looks comfortable, although it is easy to use.:)

I don't work for them...honest ;) but deffo have a look at the Nedzbedz website (link above) as they put stuff in it which discourages them eating it...it's straw but easier :)
