Hi fellow H&H's;

just recently ive changed my horses bedding from straw to wood pellets, reason being I needed something a bit less maintenance due to working hours & early mornings;

so far I love them, however ... I liked straw for the big cosy look, wood pellets just don't look cosy, as much as theyre brilliant for my extremely wet gelding.

question is, to fluff up my boys bet a little would mixing wood pellets with shavings be any good? & still as easy to muck out?

thanks in advance for any replies received.

I don't mix them. I put a layer of pellets at the base and put a bed (not very deep really) of shavings on top. My mare is very wet and I've been so surprised how well this works. I just removed droppings every day but shavings stay clean and dry and I dig out the pellets once a week.

ah, fab! how often do you put shavings in? & new pellets in? do you put dry pellets in or soak them?
my wet gelding bed walks so they will probs mix a little from that, but ill just put shaving on the top then :)

thanks for replies so soon.

Also this.

I put the pellets in dry on his wee spot, shavings from the banks on top then the new bale. If you can get hold of Sundown, they're cheap, last well, come in eucalyptus scent if desired!

I damped the pellets slightly just to make them stay still!! Leave them dry and they mix into the bed too easily and move around. I use 1 bag a week. Sometimes shell have a very wet week and the shavings start getting wet too, so I just throw them straight out. I just leave the pellets in a week.

I get a bale of shavings every week with my livery so that goes in. Not sure she needs one that regularly really

I do as above also, works really well for me as my horse is clean so I literally take the poo out and the shavings stay spotless. It's then really easy to scrape them back and remove the wet patch which is contained underneath.
