Shavings question

I am hopefully going to be loaning a horse in the next few weeks and his owner keeps him on bedding as he's quite messy. The horse already at my yard is on straw but his owner said if I use straw I'll probably find myself throwing a lot of it out. If I go down the shavings route, are there particular shavings that have to be used? I only wonder because my step dad is a joiner and therefore produces rather a lot of shavings everyday but I don't know if these would be suitable for a horse bed.
 
My friends pony is disgusting on straw, the only way be could manage him on it was to give him a small bed so he could wee and poo in it and then take all of it out everyday. He was on rubber matting also.

He's now on bedmax and is loads better, for a start it doesn't move as much and it absorbs a lot more. And it doesn't smell!

Not sure re using non horse shavings but you need to think of dust levels and that there are no sharp pieces of wood.

And lastly how exciting for you :-)
 
I remember being told years ago that you couldnt use shavings from "red" wood, I suppose they mean mahogany or something. Don't know the reason though
 
Shavings & mats work for me I like it so much better than straw. They smell better as well. The only thing with shavings you will use is they aren't dust extracted it may not both the horse or you for that matter, but it creases me and my horse if I don't have dust extracted shavings
