shavings under straw ?

really helped soak the wee up and made mucking out a dream! Used it on a v wet mare and it was much better than just straw, while being cheaper than a full shavings bed.

Have used a bucket of sawdust under middle of a straw bed for gelding (sawdust available locally at £1 bag to fill and move yourself) Hardly any straw thrown away. Worked well but have not been able to buy good enough straw recently.

thats my sort of bedding for years now and even a very messy mare I owned previously was dry n clean with shavings under straw...I also think it's warmer in winter than just shavings but that may just be my opinion...it's deffo more dry and clean than just shavings or just straw.

Can 100% recommend it! Used it last winter when shavings were so expensive and straw was scarce. I wouldn't use anything else now I don't think.

Hi, I use Nedz Advanced under my straw and i find it really works to keep the wet at the bottom and the top dry.
I deep litter my straw and only muck out once a week. Removing the poops everyday and chuck some fresh straw on the top.
He's in every night through out the year and has never come out in the morning with a wet hoof. It doesn't smell until the big muck out and i make hubby do that bit!!!
Lol, only joking.
I have also used the wood pellet type and shavings but i have found the Nedz works really well, maybe because it's compacted straw rather than wood?
It's only £6 a bag and i use one bag a week.

I have shavings under one banking (usually shamelessly nicked from another liveries stable - with permission obviously) and round a corner in Blues as the mare next door is on rubber matting so all her wee runs off and in to his stable....His beds still messy as hell, but not as wet in that area.

i was considering to do this with shavings down first, when they both come in at night, so im glad for this thread.
i was going to put a bale of shavings down mostly in the middle, then a thick bed of straw.
due to my percheron having a very large stable, i was going to deep litter him.
then have a dig out once in a while and thought the shavings for a while will soak up some of the wee.
the other stable is smaller but i still was going to put shavings down first.

ive just had my straw delivered a big heston 8x4x4 so i wonder how long that will last in the winter for 2 17.2 horses.
