i generally now prefer shavings as i can be more assured of their quality and are far easier to muck out than rubber mats, especially with my mucky horse!
Stablelite rubber mats with Shavings, only took me 6 months and I had recooped the cost of the mats, now I can use half the amount of shaving without worrying about him on the concrete, also better for his breathing.
A choice out of those 2 it would definitely be shavings. Straw is literally free for me (farmer) but I hate it! Shavings are so much easier. However, once my stables are built I'm having flax bedding with rubber mats
I used to think shavings but my mare thinks that if she has a shavings bed it should permanently look like it's snowing in the stable! She just digs and digs and it makes it almost impossible to muck out. She doesn't do this so much on straw so I definitely prefer straw for her. Having said that, she really doesn't like being in so she mostly lives out anyway.
i don't have rubber matting, however i really hate straw and always end up with a huge dung heap as it takes ages to degrade. and also as a asthma sufferer i end up struggling to breathe after muckin out a couple of stables, so i'm thinkin of changing to shavings. do u think i should?? is it alot more expensive than straw?? i heard u have to muck out less?? (confused) lol
