Megazorb - which is paperpulp rather than woodshavings claims to be 10x more absorbent than shavings. It is very, very absorbent and it is better to deep litter. It looks a lot like cat litter but softer! The bags aren't huge but if you have a relatively clean horse they'd be good.
IMO for deep littering you can't beat Hemcore, or, at a push Hemcore where the horse pees and a good decent bed of shavings such as Thoroughbred, Hunter etc.
I have also tried Absorbabed which is extremetly good at soaking up the "wet patch".
I found that countrywide were the best normal shavings
We can deep litter, I did last winter.
I first took out the poos then throw up the clean into the banks, leaving the wet down. I then patted the wet down flat as poss, left the bed open during the day and made up the bed at night.
I did this because I putting a stupid amount of shavings into the bed as my horse box walked so would churn everything up. I ended up putting in half a bale a week.
Leaving the bed open let's the wet dry out a bit so can deep litter longer. Also I had a full bed on top of the wet, which kept lovely a fluffy white.even when I emptied the stable at the end of the winter I still had a full clean bed.
My boy is on Hunter shavings as that's what they use at the yard and I find them really good Good and absorbant (although I like to take out the wet - we recently had a case of mild thrush and so I'm being even MORE neurotic about bedding, something I didn't feel was possible ) and I also don't think they smell like some other types can? Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just my horse, but I don't think they do smell as much when soiled xx
Agree Hemcore is the best, but it's way too expensive now! I stopped using it last year as it was double the price of my current bedding (£12ish a bag!) I'm now using Bliss bedding similar to hemcore. I think it's made from Flax. It's not as absorbent as hemcore but I have been deep littering it and it performs well, the cost is so much lower I don't have to think about adding more if needed either (only £6.00ish a bag)
it's nice and fluffy too! looks good and softer than shavings, doesn't smell either. Hate it when shavings make stables smell like a hamsters cage! can't bare that smell.
im averaging 1 bale of shavings every 3 months (out from 10am-7pm) i pick out the poo daily & then once a week i lift and turn over the entire bed removing any sopping wet (rarely any) and leave spread out over entire floor to air for the day, then in eve i go & re-make the bed.
i wa taught be 2 exservicemen this trick & it has halved my bedding costs & mucking out time by more than half (& it doesnt smell for more than 20 mins on turning day)
