How is everyone finding the availablility of shavings - am told they are going to china so the four main producers from Holland are having trouble getting hold of the raw product. Hence shavings have gone up £1 a bag instantly! And all our local suppliers, sussex, seeem in short supply. Is this just in our area?

Shavings are a night mare this year due to the lack of good straw.

Our y/o supplies shavings for £6 a bale but they are all span ones.

I used to get my own hunters in but even they went downhill so i decided to say goodbye to shavings and ive gone on equisorb and not looked back since.

Shavings have shot up in price but to be honest there are so many other alternatives on the market theses days that you have more choice.

No problem at the moment in Bucks, touch wood!! Have heard there are shortages in other areas though, think the fire at Bedmax is causing problems.

Price at my supplier has gone up by 50p a bale but I've had no dificulty in buying what I want so far.

No prob so far in Wales. £6.25 in our local tack shop but this news has given me the eeby jeebies so will draw to the attention of our YO who thoughtfully buys in a supply for liveries to purchase on site if they want. My mare can pee at an Olympic standard so the thought of no shavings fills me with horror. How many Andrex toilet rolls equals 1 shavings bale, anyone know?

Yikes, we already have to pay £6.60 for mediocre shavings... Although we only use a thin layer under straw luckily and not whole beds of them.

Funny you should say that as I have just been to Derby House and they are struggling to get any from their normal supplier...they have these smaller bales at the moment that are the same price as larger ones and down to 24 bales and that is it and they do not know when they will get their normal supplier to deliver!!!

Any shortage of shavings at the moment will be because most Chipboard, MDF and OSB manufacturers in the UK and on the continent closed down over the Christmas holidays. (They don't usually!) Also, more and more manufacturers are recycling their waste as fuel so that they can save on costs.
It should ease once manufacturers are running at full capacity again.

Our local Scats have risen but about 70p per bale which I think is now £6.40 each. Currently trying to find a supplier that will deliver a few pallet loads (about 100-150 bales) to try and save some pennies. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm in Berkshire.

Seems to be a problem in Kent too, just getting mini hunters back at Frogpool, but had some real naff stuff over past month

Thank you for all your replies , there have been more posts from other areas. my usual supplier went from £5.15 to £6.15 over night . other liveries at my yard have paid £5.95 plus v.a.t but delivered. I understand Bodels near Burgesshill were charging £6.80 for average shavings and they were only able to get half their delivery. Now with this glorious wet weather horses have been in more and every one is paranoid about how much bedding their using. Is it a marketing excercise on the equine world or genuine shortage?
