Theres a girl on my yard who won't wear her riding hat, because 'it gives her skin infection' :S I hate seeing her cantering round, hair flying everywhere. Its just dangerous.

Stupid girl....better an itchy head than one with her brains spilling out of it.

how can she have brains if she hasn't the brains to wear a hat

There was someone on my old yard like this.

She claimed she owned the horse since it was a 4yo, knew every trick she'd throw and didn't need a hat for flatwork and jump schooling.

didn't consider the 'flight' instinct and the fact horses are unpredictable and the horse in question was 17.1hh WBxTB. Other than that she was my favourite person on the yard, cos she wasn't bitchy like the rest of them.

Get YO to check the t&c of their insurance policy. It was certainly used as the excuse for why all liveries had to wear hats while mounted on the property (can't do much about off site).

Eejit! Fell off and hit my head off the road last year, had a hat on and would never go out without it, dont wanna risk smashng my head up!
Theres a woman from the livery yard up the road who rides western with no hat, annoys me every time we see her out, it's so irresponsible!

It's her choice, I do love how offensive people get about other people exercising their right to choose whether to wear a hat or not

Ditto again

It's stupid but on her own head be it (literally!)

I see where that OP is coming from, but if something happens, that's her lookout if she's an adult.

Chances are we've all done some fairly irresponsible things whilst riding at some point ... I know I certainly have

When I moved onto the yard, the yo said he's not bothered what we do, as long as we look after our horses and wear a hat. He's not horsey, he's a gun shop owner that has some stables. They obv never told her that.
I dont wanna go and tell the yo that she isnt wearing a hat, i'll just wait till he sees her. Hes always close by

Well he won't get in to trouble, but I'd bet she could successfully sue him for not ensuring her health and safety whilst on his property by insisting that hard hats were worn when riding a horse.

Yes, on your own land. However, if she fell of, hit her head on a rock on YO property, he could be found liable. I would never allow someone to ride on my property without a hat, and am amazed any YO do.

Yes, it is her choice, but it's not necessarily her family's choice to have to devote their lives to looking after a brain damaged and/or paralysed individual, to say nothing of having to find the money to do so where it's her own fault and there's no compensation or insurance available.

I still have the hat I was wearing when I was thrown into a barn door and hit my head on the steel runners at the bottom. The hat itself was cracked open and is complete with blood stains. My head still has a small lump on the back to this day, but I have to wonder what I would have had without the hat.

OK, so it's her head, her decision.... BUT.... who will look after her when she has an accident? Your taxes go to pay the NHS who will come and scrape her brains out of the ditch and put them back in her head. Your taxes will pay for the ongoing care. Your insurance premiums will go up as a result of the claim. Her family will suffer at the loss of their daughter/wife/sister/mother.

It's pure selfishness - if you have an option to reduce risk then a responsible adult should take it. As a rider of horses and motorbikes I ALWAYS go out in protective gear, even if it's just a quickie. We all know that no horse is bombproof... I have known a particular horse since he was 3 days old, backed him and have ridden him on and off for his whole 14 year life. I know him inside out... but I would never ride him without a hat.

It's easy to shrug your shoulders and say "it's her choice" but, in the end, is it? Yes, ultimately it's her choice, but the consequences go way beyond her short-sighted viewpoint.

The thing that always gets me is why people wouldn't wear a hat, as if it's for cosmetic reasons? It takes 5 seconds to put on your hat? It F*cks up your hair for the day sure, but Jesus, it's your life and your safety and yes it's people's own choice but I will get on my 'high horse' and say that anyone, ANYONE no matter how experienced or how safe the horse, who doesn't wear a hat, is purely and simply an idiot.
