I'm just getting some insurance quotes and so far Shearwater have been the most easy to deal with and cheapest! So anyone got any experience and are they good at paying out? Many thanks in advance
Ah thanks guys, I am trying them too, but have to wait for the paperwork to come through for the vetting I had done last week before they'll do anything, but I will hold fire 'til I've got something back from them (NFU). I have had NFU recommended to me before but just wondered what experience people might have had of Shearwater. Thanks again!
I've been with Shearwaters for several years, horse & lorry. They have been great & for me about half the price of NFU for the same cover. No problems at all.
Depends if it is a new horse or an existng horse. If its a new horse be VERY careful of what cover you get in the first month. NFU don't cover for illness in the first month - so if your horse colics (my beloved boy died of colic last week) you will not be covered! If you have already been insured and are changing over to them they will cover you for illness within the first month. Check this with all the insurance companies you talk to - its amazing what the small print excludes
Thanks Pippipony, thats good to hear, and Hollycat, so sorry to hear about your horse
The horse is owned by a good friend, I have had him on loan for over a year and now agreed to buy him, but I guess, as far as insurance is concerned he is a new horse, I'll certainly remember to ask that question to the companies when I'm getting quotes, thank you!
This is possible yes, but I have had a quote from his existing insurer and I think I can get a cheaper quote, however don't want to get a cheap quote from a company that doesn't pay out! I thought it would be sensible to have a shop around...
In a word no! I was so disapointed with them I cancelled my plicies and transferred to KBIS who I have been with ever since.
PM if you would like the full details.
I have had various policies with them and they have been competative.
They were fanastic with Fleur who had several expensive claims - paid promptly and no quibbles. Did not put an exclusion on her leg which suffered a bad cut and covered the expensive GA and surgery procedure to aid faster recovery.
Currently have Chancer and Cairo insured with them - I do like the fact that I can have £5,000 vet fees cover but choose a £500 excess to keep the price down - Chancer is the sort he is unlikely to go wrong, but I have peace of mind if he does at not too bad an expense.
NFU do not cover Illness for the first 14 days or if the horse is valued over £5000 they will require the vetting before full cover is held. If the horse is insured elsewhere and is transferred to them you can get full cover straight away in some cases if you are insuring for the same things.
Thank you everyone for the replies, is good to get a feel for the different companies, I certainly won't be committing to anything with any company until I've had a chat with NFU as they have come up time and time again as being a good company to insure with from people I have spoken to in RL an on here. Thanks Vicky and Hollycat again for the tip on the initial cover for illness
