hey, do you guys with gelding clean there sheaths regularly ? i did the other day and used a sheath cleaning product but it didnt work that well, a friend recomended aqueaous cream any one tried this ?

I love sheath cleaning!!! Mine hates his done so I like to do other peoples horses as well, my friends is the best, he loves it!! Get ready to put some long gloves on! I usually lather my hand in TLC or Durex lubricant and massage the sheath from the inside so the grot becomes little balls and falls out. Lovely!!

I use sheath cleaner, but my 31 year old has been a bit smelly recently and last week I noticed him dribbling urine. I haven't seen him pee so don't know what his penis is looking like.

I have noticed references to Hibiscrub. What % should be used?

Check to see if he has a bean inside his urethra. My gelding had exactly the same problem a couple of months back. Whenever he had a wee, his "man bit" wasn't dropping down properly and he kept dribbling urine for a bit after he'd finished weeing. Also noticed that he was a bit smelly in that department. :rolleyes:
Had a little rummage around and he had a bean. Luckily his was very easy to remove, just gave a gentle squeeze and out it popped. :D
They can be difficult to get out though so be prepared to call the vet out if you can't do it yourself. Some people say to leave them and let nature take it's course but after reading this article, I'd be reluctant to leave it in there.

please be careful, smegma can have very sharp edges and cut, causing infection. also hibiscrub is harsh stuff and can cause a skin reaction as well as killing commensal bacteria which are protective. unless I had some guidance from a vet because there was a big problem, I would stick to baby oil/aqueous cream to soften rahter than using harsh detergents first off.

Just cleaned my pony's tonight - he's the only one who really gets a gunky sheath. He loves it being cleaned though. He gets very itchy so i thin it's relief gaving it cleaned. He gets grotty lumps and it stinks. I used a sheath cleaner that works well and have also been told to use canestan to help stop the itching and fingal infection. So, I have a nice tube of canestan for men at the ready!!! Lol

Dangly bits give me the creeps lol I alway pay someone on the yard to do it whilst I 'hold' the lead rope and keep them calm haha :D
 
I don't do my boys dangly parts! asked vets about it and they pretty much said that once you do it you have to do it forever and that unless there was a particular issue let natures take its course!
 
Ok I dont mean to hi-jack the thread but.....................
My lad has a pink sheath and looks dirty on the outside which makes me wonder if its the same inside? And with someone else posting about MAGGOTS I am now petrefied (sp!) of what I will find up there. Should I clean it anyway or wait until he pee's and get a good look then? He pee's daily in his stable so wouldn't be difficult to see :)
 
I never clean my boys sheaths unless there is a problem. Also, one of mine absolutely hates having it cleaned! The one time he did have to have it cleaned the vet had to sedate him and do it for me! :o

Non-horsey neighbour saw me addressing the problems of my old livery horse's sheath. He was amazed, and has threatened to put a sign on our gate, which fronts onto the village street "Winkle Tickling. By Appointment Only". He says he thinks I might get lots of customers!!!
