Sheath cleaning

Had my gelding for 4 months now and noticed his "man" parts are filthy and crusty, he is only 4 yrs old so doubt he has ever had them cleaned before, and previous to him i have only ever had mares!
i want to clean it, so its clean and hopefully i can then leave it alone, but whats the best thing for cleaning?
i have heard baby oil, but then heard the PH is not right in it so could cause problems, then diluted washing up liquid.......sheath cleanser???

so folks, any tips on how to do this the right way so (pardon the pun)....its a nice experience for him as im sure he has not had it done before (ohhh that sounds rude but was not intended that way!!!)
 
Hi, ive always used baby oil on geldings sheaths and never had a problem, when they drop it i squirt the oil on. Next time they drop its usually all clean and crusties off. If its particulary dirty you might need to do it twice, then youll prob be able to leave alone for a goodly while. I do this on all my geldings at work and have owned geldings for 10 years plus and done it and not once have i had a problem.
 
There is no way to say this and not have it sound dodgy so here goes! I found that KY jelly is the best thing ever for cleaning my lads bits. I figured that if its ok for "personal use" in people it can't do any harm to horses as it's water based. I put it on when he's relaxed and he's all hanging out. Then the next day when he relaxes again I can very quickly and gently wash off whatever is left on there with a bit of warm water and an old sock. (Good idea to have these things prepared for the opportune moment. I can honestly say that George's bits have never looked so clean! As for his actuall sheath I usually wait till I'm giving him a bath and with sock over hand and a little squirt of sheath cleaner go in for a quick rumage before he kicks my head in! Then shove in the hose for a quick rinse. I have to admit that I have had a few very funny looks for the tube of Ky that I have in my tack box and it doesn't help when I tell people what I use it for lol!!!
 
I clean up my boys sheaths once a week with sheath cleaner as that part smells and gets dirty, then same as above when they drop it i squirt it with baby oil which cleans it great and i also have never had a problem with using baby oil. My friend did with her horse once tho as he had it out alot during the day in the summer and with it being pink he burnt it a little bless him, so always be aware of that
 
Baby oil, sheath cleaner and fairy liquid are NOT good! As has been mentioned so many times before you need a water based lubricant i.e. KY Jelly. Best thing if he is young is to do it in two stages, nice long glove squirt KY in hand and around glove stick hand up into sheath and coat as much of it as you can. Then leave (if you do it in eve) till morning and then scoop out any hard bits that are now soft and any grease and then with a sponge and warm water slosh it all out. If you find that some of the grease has 'leaked' out onto his leg fur then you can use the shampoo on that.

My youngster gets a really greasy sheath and he loves having it cleaned - I might add he also doesn't mind having the cold hose pipe up there!!

We clean mr b's as and when it needs it, if we stroke his tail out his man bits come!!! We use baby wipes (the sensitive ones) it's a lovely job!!! Xx

This post made me cry with laughter! So much so that my husband had to read it too and his comment was "lucky George"!!!

I've never tried KY jelly but going to give it a go as baby oil gives my boy a sore willy!!! Usually I just use water....
