Cannot believe the response to this as well as mix of opinions!
I have never seen any of this black sticky stuff on legs you are referring to, and certainly no pee-spray. He is always hanging out after being ridden, and although a few flakey bits certainly no smell or horrific looking things. I was sort of in the same mindset as those saying it does more harm than good, as is the same with anything where good and bad bacteria lives, but then didnt want to get to a point where I was just telling myself nature would run its course when actually he needed some human assistance!
Vet is coming out soon so might mention it to her and see what she says...
