Sheath cleaning!

Cannot believe the response to this as well as mix of opinions!

I have never seen any of this black sticky stuff on legs you are referring to, and certainly no pee-spray. He is always hanging out after being ridden, and although a few flakey bits certainly no smell or horrific looking things. I was sort of in the same mindset as those saying it does more harm than good, as is the same with anything where good and bad bacteria lives, but then didnt want to get to a point where I was just telling myself nature would run its course when actually he needed some human assistance!

Vet is coming out soon so might mention it to her and see what she says...
 
What a great thread and so helpful! I have recently acquired a boy and he always has his donger out. I asked the vet about it and she said it's part of his "presence and shows a good telescopic action, so not problematic" He wasn't cut late. He has cornflakes and they look vile. His old owner has told me to just use water. I am going to pluck up the courage tomorrow, having only ever had mares in 30 years of horse ownership!;)
 
I'd post a photo of the black sticky stuff on my grey Shetlands' hind legs, but I've just clipped it all off!!

My shettie is unfortunately riddled with melanomas 'up there', and I assume this is the reason for his particularly bad case of the black tarry stuff..... which pongs to high heaven!

Although he rarely drops his bits, he's happy for me to sit on a stool (my milking stool!!) with my head against his flank and to give it all a good clean.... he rarely stands still for anything apart from sheath cleaning and clipping, I assume he likes it!

I know when things are starting to get bad because he'll breast any spare plastic electric fence posts and walk slowly over them so they rub his tum and nether regions. He does the same to small trees and tree stumps, and constantly rubs his bum on the gates and fences.... and then he gets the black gunk on his hind legs.

I probably do him about 4 times a year. It's tricky because he has so many lumps under the skin and lumps on top of the skin, it's hard to know what's what.

What's worse, is that my YO thinks Inka is the luckiest boy in the world - eek !!!!
