Ok.. so its a horrible job but someones got to do it!!

What brand do you use? Does anyone use one which is easy to use/doesn't need rinsing?

Just looking for options, nasty job best done quickly and hopefully out of sight!!
 
Hehehe, I found out about this last year and wow, what an experience the first time I did it... Anyways, I use red rum sheath cleaner, all worked well and one clean sheath at the end of it. Smells nice too :)
 
Same here! I got a blue one? That you only have to wash off, but not very keen when it's this cold neither is he tbh :P oh well has to be done.... Mind I have heard the vet will do it lol!
 
Lol - Yep its gotta be done and shame on anyone who doesnt do it, so good on you.

Its very good, it helps to loosen all the dirt and gooey bits! Just put it on a gloved hand or sponge and wipe inside, i usually get in there with a gloved hand as you can pick the big lumps out, the cleanser must then be rinsed out with warm water not left in! I usually do this procedure twice in one cleaning session and about once in the winter months and 2-3 times throughout the summer ;)

Had vet out this week for annual jabs and asked her about my gelding smelly dirty sheath/willy and was told you should never use anything but warm water and only if absolutely necessary, if you use any kind of cleaner it strips all the good bacteria as well as bad from the area making it more succestable to infections. she said to only clean if absolutely necessary which I totally agreed with.

C&C I use that one at the moment!!! I haven't done it yet this winter as I feel so guilty getting him with the hose in this cold!

It would be so much easier if there was one you just apply, wipe the dirt with a sponge and that be the end of it
 
Make it a part of the grooming ritual once a week, a washed out detergent bottle full of warm water, with touch of baby oil always works well for me with no infections to date.

Most geldings will relax when groomed and you take the moment to have a squirt..

A friend of mine uses baby oil, just a quick wipe around and leaves it in, it does the same thing and loosens it all up.

Cloud 9 - I dont agree with not cleaning it, its suprising how you can get such different opinions from Vets, mine has said that half the reason for urinary infections is LACK of cleaning on the owners part.
 
Imperial Leather soap and warm water as recommended by our vet! If its really mucky then do it in stages so not to cause any irritations
 
I'm another one that uses the Barrier Animal Healthcare Natural Sheath Cleanser, seems very gentle and isn't meant to strip the bacteria I don't think. I just do it when I spot there a bit of build up.
 
Try a squirt of KY jelly (buy the cheaper own label brand) every couple of days for a week. Naturally cleaning everytime it makes an appearance and very gentle, then a quick (warm) sponge in clean water at the end of the week if needed.
Once every six months should be more than enough unless you have a very 'scurfy' (is that actually a word!?!) horse, never is actually nature's way but then we all went against her by gelding, so our boys never get to use their 'man stick' and clean themselves when mounting! My boy did become quite swollen a few weeks ago and is now nicely lubed up! :D
