Came down this am and noticed my gelding’s sheath poss a bit swollen more around his sheath ?

Or am I just over thinking things as flies have been bad 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

Flies could cause that. Can you clean him and then apply a fly cream to the sheath only? I always used Battles Yellow Summer Fly Cream. If it comes and goes, and there's a link to how bad the flies are, I think you have your answer. If it's still does it once you've eliminated flies, then I'd get the vet to have a look.
 
That's probably just flies if it's not a long term thing. It's the season for black flies and mine is suffering from them too. I put battles fly cream on.
 
My EMS pony suffers from a swollen sheath when his lymphatic system is compromised due to much sugar so if your pony is on grass it could be the cause. Unfortunately the grass is like rocket fuel at the moment and even if you think there isn’t much out there there is and it really doesn’t take much to tip them over the edge.

With mine I remove him from all grass and put him on a mud patch and when he was ridden a good fast hour sorted it out by kick starting the lymph system.
 
Wash the sheath and all the under belly put on fly stuff of choice 2 to 3 times daily

Use soap and warm water then wipe over Daily with salt and dettol water

Probably a bit pongy underneath attracting flies


And confine with hay if suspect with spring grass
 
Baggs my retired lad has had this a few times and it was a result of the below :

1) He had some awful beans that when they were removed, the swelling went down immediately
2) He was borderline laminitic, so I adjusted his lifestyle and the swelling went down over a few days
3) He had a reaction to vaccines and the vet prescribed some cream to help bring the swelling down
4) He was a bit pongy down there and flies had nibbled him - Mr Sensitive had a reaction to the fly bites
5) He'd taken a kick from a very annoyed mare who he had hedge hopped to go and woo (in his mind!) and she promptly told him where he could shove his romantic attempt.....

It's deffo worth keeping an eye on though x
 
Could be flies, could be grass growth, could be a precursor for Lami.

I’m not going to lie, Faran could have a cracking swollen sheath at times 😢 he wasnt particularly fat and in a good amount of work, his Lami wasnt metabolic (all tests negative) but since I’ve leaned him down and put him in the track he hasn’t had a swollen sheath at all.

My EMS pony was exactly the same. It was the only sign, other than being porky, that he had!
 
Could be flies/midges. I put Thomas Pettifer Green oil gel around sheath area on hot days as the midges and flies seem to hate it (and can’t bite in case they stick to it) I would treat as a fly bite and if it doesn’t go down in a few days I’d get Vet for second opinion.
