I love it. We had a couple of lambs last year that used to hassle the dogs on the footpath. It was very amusing seeing dogs reactions.

If they are confident are dogs less likely to hassle them?

Depends on the dog I guess. Our collies get a bit embarrassed when the lambs get friendly with them, don't quite know how to react.

Ha ha so funny. I remember in my pre- marrying-a-shepherd days both me and my dogs were a little worried by what were obviously pet lambs chasing us across a field. I couldn't understand why sheep were acting so out of character pmsl.

I am sure there would be less sheep worrying incidents if sheep were very confident and stood their ground as it is the movement that often triggers a dog to chase. However, there will of course be some dogs who would also run up and attack confident sheep too. Not to mention it would make a sheepdog's job much trickier lol.

Once took a walk through a field of excessively friendly sheep. They all headed straight for us. Image on the right has not been cropped !

I used to live next door to a sheep Farm. One lamb season walking my 3 Kerry Blue Terriers in my field one decided to go under the gate and run around in the field with sheep and lambs, the other two quickly followed (they had never done this before and never did it again). I jumped the gate rounded up the naughty dogs and headed back. I turned round to check the sheep were all OK to find that 3 very curious lambs were following us.
I did phone my neighbour to tell him that dogs had got into field and if there were any I’ll effects to let me know.

I assume he was a pet lamb as the others showed more normal levels of awareness - like keep away from the two people and the three dogs. But a ewe did come and get him, so whether she was just the lady in charge or she had adopted him, I don't know. The sheep stamping her foot was even scarier!
I am always so impressed by the behaviour of these prey animals when they are maternal. So brave.
Tawny bought me a new born roe fawn once and it's mum was charging me, I was there with four dogs. Her fawn was fine and grew up quite unharmed but the fact that the deer was game to go for me was so impressive.

Yes that maternal instinct can be so strong, even when under serious threat ... very impressive to see.

If it’s the pic of the gsd facing the black faced rams I was so impresssed by that dog I saved the pic( tsk tsk) hoping one day I may pyro it..when my skills are up to the task.Those dogs are the only shepherds ive ever seen doing that job...iwould love to see them work on that show from years past( where the collies have to pen etc under competition....one man and his dog? )
..the sheep here are truely huge,with long drooping ears like goats and very aggressive if unknown dogs enter their field,they have been known to kill them.

The field behind me is often where the farmer puts his weak injured or not so fortunate lambs and sheep, so they get fed by humans twice a day I have a strip I ride and walk along next to the field and they are hilarious, they all just come running towards you the noise is something else so my dog is quite used to them the horses are to now and you have the whole flock following you the whole way until you get to the end
