Sheep Ring Feeders for hay in field

I have been reading these can be quite dangerous re putting legs through them - anyone had any experience of this?

Someone also said i should fill the gaps in round the side - i.e. put rubber matting round it? Does anyone do this?

I have been told they are potentially dangerous. I use tractor tyres! My neighbour was more than delighted to find a home for his old (huge) ones. Delivery and purchase cost a pint of beer!!
The only downside is, they are difficult to move, so it does need 3 or so of you if you intend moving them about. They suit all ours from 10hh to 16.2hh.

ooooh tractor tyres... can you get a whole round bale in them?? or do you just fill them with loose hay? i like the idea of them :)

You probably wouldn't get a whole round bale in them, although mine certainly take a small square one. As safety is a priority ( not keen on vet bills:D) I am more than happy to shake out the small ones. For me, it also keeps the poaching in winter to one area, and stops loose hay flying about.

farm and country, epping sell them.
i have one and one downside is the sharp edge where they join together!
its handy for the winter, and you can move them by yourself, but the tractor tyre sounds a good idea too!!

I got my sheep ring feeder from a Farm Sale that is held locally twice a year in our county. I also purchased a cast iron circular tree guard with four feet on it which are dug into the ground and is perfect for my stallion, can't move it around though but as there is only him using it it doesn't get too poached, it is positioned so that he can 'watch over' everyone else and that suits him down to the ground. The sheep feeder is in two halves and I attach half to a fence post so then I have two feeders which I fill with haylage each day (twice a day) and these can be moved about and there are no sharp edges exposed. I use electric fence wire to attach and if someone gets caught it will break. I have not had anyone stick their feet in them and I have numpty appaloosas who are very good at getting into trouble! (I love them really).
