We have one boundary of the field which is not walled and we put up sheep wire when we got here(13 years ago). It has been problem free until this week. Amber, who is a 15.3 appy has very very small feet, she appears to have been rolling and got a back hoof through the wire. When we got to her she had pulled up half the length of the wire and pulled up or broken several fence posts.
She was so lucky as all she had done was graze her fetlock and a couple of marks up her thigh.
Needless to say the sheep wire has gone and is currently replaced with electric!
 
My friend had an old pony that rolled near sheep wire. She got caught up all night and by the time we got to her she'd given up. We spent most of that day trying to get her to stand but her muscles had deteriorated so much she couldn't and had to be PTS.
My shettie also, tried to jump off a bank over some sheep wire and landed on it. His leg went through one of the squares and it cheesewired his back leg!! Needless to say I don't like the stuff!!

I hate sheep wire and barbed wire, and living on a farm I can't get away from it

My horses have always been in with it, but I've luckily not had any problems, but I'm setting a livery yard up and every paddock will have permanent posts with electric fencing 12 ft away from any hedges, fences, etc, which is what my horses now have. Like this-

Really glad your horse is ok and didn't have any serious injuries!
 
I think we all do, then something happens that gives us a wake up call.

My WB would lean right over the sheep and barbed wire to graze (the grass is always greener the other side right?!

). And when I saw her doing this I was shocked she didn't rip herself (she just ripped rug after rug

) or get her legs caught! Like my farrier says 'Sheep wire is the bain of my life, the holes are perfect size for horses' feet and then they rip their shoes off....or worse'.
 
I can't understand why YO's have that bloody wire round the fencing where horses are,my mare almost ripped her leg off with bad fencing

When we inspected the paddock the next day there was a roll of wire left in her paddock so we took a photo for future reference

We are the yard owners! Only ours on the land and have had no problems till Amber got caught on Wednesday, no-one elses hooves were small enough to go through the holes. Wire is nos all removed.

If its your won horses fair enough i was thinking more livery yards as a business where people pay good money to keep their horses safe.
