Does anyone use one of these?

I am doing some online christmas shopping (for horse not me

) and I am buying a couple of nice saddlecloths for him so I can have some spares and so im not using the same 2 every day!

I am buying one saddlecloth and one numnah but I have noticed loads of people at the yard are using a half pad over their numnahs, presumably to cusion the horse more?

I am thinking of getting one but wont if it is pointless

Horse has a correctly fitted saddle, although he has some muscle wastage so i suppose he could do with some cushioning around the withers.

So does anyone use one just for cosmetic reasons rather than it having an actual use? Do you like it? Does it effect the fit of your saddle?

Any thick pad affects the fit of your saddle - it makes the saddle narrower (or the horse wider, depending on your perspective

Many horses really like them but not all - three of mine loved them, current one hates them. They do give a little extr a cushioning and the sheepskin is very good at wicking away sweat.

They're great if the saddle is a smidgen too wide (i.e dropped a little weight in the winter) but make the problem worse if the saddles a little too narrow.

make sure your saddle is fitted to take the dead sheep pad in to account-i always have my saddles fitted to allow for them, as yes i think it provides a little extra cushioning, and also allows for a bit more muscle building underneath, than if you have the saddle fitted perfectly with no pad.

He has lost muscle over the past 6 months due to lack of work and i expect he will continue to do so over winter as he is only being ridden once a week at most! Saddler was out in May when he was slightly fatter, but i expect the weight will pile back on in spring!

His saddle fits well but there is a gap between the withers and top of the saddle that makes sense, and i was hoping a bit more cusioning might make him a little more comfy. Ride away have cheap shires ones for £15, i might try one of those first and see what he makes of it (he might object like he did to the fleece girth cover lol)

I use them on my horse who is "sensitive" through his back but I don't use an additional numnah. It does mean I have to wash them regularly but smother them in human hair conditioner first and they come up as good as new.

Great in summer as they absorb the sweat so horse stays nice and dry under the saddle.
