I'm thinking of buying one of these for my ex-racer, who has massive withers. Does anyone have any reccomendations for or against different brands, Nuumed, Stephens, Bartl, Mattes etc?

Thanks in advance

I have a Mattes one but i have never used it!.It is too thick for my saddle and a bad idea to get a black one when have a grey horse!.

Mine is Stephens and is lovely, also use it on my high withered TBx works well if partnered with a griffin hi-wither dassle cloth.
Have a feeling Mattes and Stephans are/used to be made by the same people or at the same factory- could be wrong tho (useless info!)

Just bought one through horse health wessex they are now making their own and discontinuing the stephens pads.
Its fabulous, doesnt have filling down the gullet so doesnt add bulk along the spine.
Im really chuffed with it and it cost 49 quid.

I've got a Bartl sheepskin dressage pad, looks great & does it's job well. Got a Fusion sheepskin half pad for the jumping saddle again very good & a stephens half pad for the GP. I don't thing there is alot to choose between easch of them really.

Possibly the Fusion one is the best of the half pads...the Bartle is really tasty though

I've got 2 Mattes ones - both wear well and fit well, again don't have filling down spine so not pressure - best bit - got them off ebay for a tenner each

I've got a Stephens half pad which was great when I had my last saddle, I've got a new saddle now so it's not needed any longer. I might have to sell it on ebay....

I have a Stephens one - no recommendation really because I dont know what the others are like.

Can recommend having one though - they absorb slight saddle movement and you really feel closer to your horse.

Thanks everyone, I've had a look as the Bartl ones seem to be the most popular, but I can't seem to find them with brown sheepskin, only natural, grey or black. Any ideas if they do brown?

is this not classed as advertising for Horse Health wessex? have been really moaned at for mentioning websites before and although www. is not mentioned it is pretty obvious and this site has been mentioned before? what are the rules?

Sorry but I have no idea what you're on about bracken1? I've asked for reccomendations for a sheepskin pad for my horse, I fail to see what horse health wessex have to do with that?
