Hi all ,
Would really love to get my mare a sheepskin numnah/saddlecloth.. Preferably to order offline as I'm to busy to go horsey shopping:( anyway I would like a black one with cream sheepskin... I was wondering if they wash well as she MUST always have a beautifully clean numnah:D and in woods I can only imagine the state it will get in! And also what is the standard of Faux sheepskin Numnahs? Are they better than sheepskin? Do they wash up okay!!? If I can save money I def will! Oh yes and she is a wee 13.2 pony!

I much prefer real sheepskin. Griffin nuumed numnahs are very good and wash really well. They also come in different sizes (eg medium fits a 16" - 17" saddle), so you should be able to get one to suit your pony. :)

I have a LeMieux Full Monty and a selection of Nuumed stuff. The LeMeiux is just gorgeous and according to the washing instructions you have to cover it in hair conditioner before putting it in the machine.

Cheap sheepskin, like Shires and Roma is absolutely horrible! If you take it off its backing it is made up of a lot of small pieces stitched together. I opened one once and it had over SEVENTY bits in it, and it was only sheepskin on the saddle patch. My horse could feel the seams in it. Either buy a really expensive Stephens/Le Mieux/Mattes one or go for wool instead.

NuuMed are wool lined - the wool is woven into a knitted backing. A lovely product and one I use but not sheepskin. Be aware that the long pile sheepsking pads, especially if a backing onto quilted cotton, could significantly alter the fit of your saddle.

I'v seen clients with all sorts of "disintegrated" sheepskin pads - the only one that I've seen hold up year in year out is Mattes. Their Platinum standard is sheepskin, everything else is wool, and they are pricey but worth it. You should wash them in a proper wool wash but ideally you won't want to wash them as often as a cotton numnah as they're best left au natural - they can be brushed to get rid of dirt in between washings.

Thank you for all replies, help and comments :) I'm on my phone so having difficulties getting on to some websites but am going to have a look on rideaway and c what they have 4 offer! Keep my eyes peeled for any sales!

my lemieux one has been worth every penny. Previously used nuumed but ended up washing the LOTS! when pony got sweaty. The lemieux you can just brush out with a curry comb and wash occasionally (and yup use conditioner) mine has been used every day for 18 months and still going strong :)

Premier equine are cheaper but good we have about 8 of them!!
If youre wanting to splash the cash, id go for either Lemieux or nuumed, although i am not a nuumed fan myself!!

Faux sheepskin is just like the old fashioned thick fluffy pads, none of the benefits of sheepskin, just a thicker pad. And I'll say again, NuuMed are wool fleece, not sheepskin.

Avoid the Roma sheepskins. They are made out of lots of tiny peices of fleece and the joins can become sharp digging into the horse's back. I got a full refund on mine because of this but know lots of other people have the same problem with them.

Yes, Nuumed are wool fleece and not sheepskin, but I now use them rather than sheepskin after my previous experience with sheepskin. Le mieux are good though. I think you get what you pay for.
