Related question to the Thorowgood thread, sort of!
Do those of you who use sheepskin/lambskin under your saddles have it directly on the horse's back or with a numnah in between - and why?

Directly on the horse's back, what would be the point of buying real sheepskin otherwise? You can get a fluffy synthetic pad for a fraction of the price of real one...

same here

That was exactly my thought... but I do know people who use expensive (circa £90) half pads between the saddle and a thin numnah...! Just wondered!
Any more?

Numnah between.

I use if because Cato needs more top line, and because of this the saddle is slightly ill fitting so a similar reason to yours..

Ahh, I suppose some people, when they pay £90 for a pad don't want it to get sweaty and dirty

Nah, really, if you are to use it as a 'filler' I would just buy a fluffy pad for £10 and use with a numnah, sheepskin directly on the back.

I put mine between the saddle cloth and saddle, it was expensive and I don't think it will last if I have to wash it nearly everytime I ride - will it?

Sheepskin washes really well, you don't need to do much to it, just lukewarm soapy water. It will be just fine, honest

depends how you wash it, and whether it is sheepskin (i.e. skin still attached) or wool knitted onto fabric... I have both - my Nuumeds get washed frequently with the normal washing (non bio) and are fine, whereas my Mattes pad which still has skin gets a wool wash.

I don't wash them every time I ride - if they get soggy I let it dry then brush gently to fluff them up, then wash when they are actually dirty, prob once a week.

I don't wash mine everytime I ride - probably after every 3. When I wash mine - they are Mattes - I cover them first in hair conditioner (cheap Tesco's value for about 30p a bottle) and then wash them on a wool wash with a wool washing liquid (not powder) and they look as good as new!!

I mean sheep don't shrink when it rains do they??!!

I use mine under the saddle, on top of a saddlecloth. I bought it simply because it looks nice, and I luuuurve sheepskin, but I have since had my saddle reflocked to accommodate it so that the fit is correct

But if you are asking me to be honest, I use it for fashion as opposed to its wicking qualities
