have just had a conversation with a friend who has a livery on her yard who's horse lost and eye whilst travelling......

apparently the Ins wont be paying out for the vet's bill because of what was deemed as an avoidable accident.....

She'd travelled him with the top front door open of the trailer...and a "Foreign Object" hit his eye...

Dreadful lesson for her horse to have learned on her behalf..

Stupid Woman!!!!!!

Sounds like you were!!!! but at least you were working on an issue. One of the ones I know leave the flipping door open coz she like the horse to have view!!!!!

How awful!
I always thought that the story was an urban legend. It is obvious it could happen but the chances appeared slim. Not slim enough for me to travel with my top door open though.

Idiot or not , I didn't have a choice, I was bringing the mare home when I just bought her , The people I bought her off travelled her like this due to her being claustrophobic , So I take it back I am not one of those idiots .

Just out of curiosty why do ivor williams have the top door ? Obviously the front loader , if they built it , surely they could have built a front load door fully minus the top part .

, i think if you drive on the road with the door open (top) you are asking for a problem to occur esp in the eyes (is why motorcyclists wear goggles) if your mare was claust' them praps borrowing/buying a lorry would be better for her anyway!!IMO

maybe so that when you are parked up you can open the top door but not put the ramp down?
they didnt design it to be open when travelling. When I bought my trailer it was part of the talk i got from the salesman - do not travel with this open.

I have no sympathy for these people and anyone above who has travelled a horse with the top door open should be ashamed of themselves.

There is a very good reason why we have windscreens and if anyone has seen a chip on them knows the risk. Never mind the solid objects, it blomin horrible having bugs in your eyes at high speed and horses have no hands to get rid of them.

Only a ignorant and uncaring person would travel with it open and not add a mesh to stop bugs and objects.

My old boss used to do this, "'cause his horse used to like looking out when we stopped at lights etc..." I knew there was a reason it was idiotic other than my boss was a general idiot. Thanks for that, I wish I'd had it as a good arguing point at the time.

I always open the top door and front ramp when loading, unless somewhere where it isn't safe to open the front ramp. Then we open the top front door just to make it a little more light as the horses come onto the trailer.

Would never in a million years travel with that front top door open. Was always told rear top door or doors open only, depending on the weather and whether on the motorway or not.

Poor horse, what a terrible thing to have happened.

Look at all the people you see driving along every day with a dog hanging out of the window.

Rotten luck for the poor horse.

Having had the rear passenger window smash at high speed on the M'way because of something hitting it that was thrown up from a car on the opposite side, I agree this is complete and utter stupidity.

Leave a gap ? eh ? lol
A full front load ramp that goes all the way to the top .
I didn't know the mare was claustrophobic until we loaded her and then they mentioned it . We let her travel down the lane and then stopped to close it, thinking she would be grand , surely she wouldnt be that bad . She was obviously moving quite alot in the box , Hubbie was towing with a transit at the time and you can't feel the box move as much as you would if towing with a short wheel base vehicle , We were half way or more than half way home when we stopped, she was sweating pretty badly . So next time we loaded her she wouldnt go in until we dropped the ramp down and soon as we closed it up she basically shat herself , She was fine standing in the box with it open and if you moved forward fine but as soon as you closed it over she started again .

So to those that think I travelled her with it open KNOWINGLY , I didn't .
I ain't that stupid .

IW always used to have the ramp going right upto the top, but it made the ramp ridiculously long, hence changing it to the short ramp with a door. Top door obviously has to be there otherwise the horse would have to duck coming out.

i would never travel the the front top door open!stones and all sorts can come flying off peoples tyres, never mind braches and stuff at side of road.
would be safer to get rear travel box or something or horse mirror if ned needs some comfort when travelling.

Nothing to do with trailers but on the same theme...a Swedish truck was on its way back home after doing the trotting circuit here in Italy. The groom was sat in the cabin and flicked his ciggie out of the window. The airflow took the lighted ciggie and deposited it in with the horses via the open windows (with grills). Bedding went on fire killing all horses and destroying the truck. I presume the groom is still in therapy
