I was born in 1969 so I guess I have an excuse.

But I had no idea that it was the IRA that kidnapped and murdered the poor lad :eek:

That realisation has hit me very hard. The B******ds.

I sincerely hope it was for nothing.

I don't understand your post. What do you mean "for nothing"
 
I watched the programme from channel 5 last night. It was before I born but too me a lot things don't add up and just sums what I understand of the IRA to be honest
 
What I mean is that that the kidnappers took Shergar, but got no money for him ? That is the way the film projected it, correct me if I am wrong.

a very sad story all round.
 
In this case I believe it was for pure financial gain - ransom = cash, cash = weapons. And with this horse being an extremely valuable animal the potential gain was huge. However, he was taken by people inexperienced in this type of animal and quickly became a burden - hence why he was 'despatched' - sad, sad end for poor Shergar but you have to understand the time and the politics - not condoning it - a lot of water has passed under that bridge since then - but unless whose involved tell all it will always remain a mystery :(

Perhaps you should read up on the other troubles which occurred during that time - as tragic as Shergar was, there were countless individuals murdered in the troubles.

Arh, I understand you now. I am old enough to have been at Epsom when he won the Derby. I remember vividly when he was kidnapped. There was never going to be a ransom paid at the time, it would have put every TB stallion at risk to be kidnapped. They had not a clue how to handle him, even then we all knew he did not live for any longer than a few hours.

Alot as happened since and hopefully things will remain relativly peaceful for the irish but my lasting memory will be that of the Hyde park bomb . those images of human snd equine bodies. So many lost thier lives in the troubles. So many innocent people.
 
there were alot of innocents killed on both sides. Remember the manchester bomb?. It was a dreadful time of constant fear "what next" and close to home. Heres to the peace in Ireland and long may it continue.

^^^^ This. There were wrongs done on both sides. While we are at it, there was also Bloody Sunday. And a lot more. No good comes from raking ashes unless we can learn from it and move on.

There is still an awful lot of speculation about the fate of Shergar. Does anyone really know for certain what happened? Apart from those involved (who aren't saying) I doubt if anyone does. So it is all guesswork.

Well said. I was born in '88 so I missed the worst of it, but I do remember a bomb scare that closed the tube. My dad couldn't get phone or get home and my mum was frantic. We are so lucky to live in peace.

The woman with the wonderful dog avatar posted on one of these Shergar threads, suggesting we educate ourselves about some of the human kidnappings and naming some of the victims. I'm incredibly grateful to her as I'd never heard of any of them (unlike Shergar). Paul Williams and his families fate will stay with me for a long time.

All jokes aside a multi million pound racehorse going missing from an Arabs ownership really was one of the least of the problems during those troublesome years. The horse left a few foals and had other relatives (I have a great nephew of Shergar) so the bloodlines weren't lost. Yes it's a shame but in the grand scheme of things he wasn't the highest of priorities.
