My 30 yr old retired mare put the tack back on today and took my 6yr old niece for her first ride!

She absolutely loved it, her face looked soooo happy, makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside, as I didn't think she'd still be here now! the plan was to not put her through another winter, but then she got a new lease of life, so she's still with me and clearly loving life!

My niece was a bit scared at the beginning because she's 15hh (ish) but after thinking she was leading her up the lane, she decided to get on and then didn't want to get off hehe

So here a few pics, please excuse her messy look, she has cushings and this is the first year she's not been clipped.

She totally loved it, so my niece has decided she will come back on xmas eve for another ride! so think it will be time to dress her up! maybe get her some antlers hehe!

It was so funny, she was legging up the lane when I was leading her, and she totally changed her attitude as soon as my niece got on her! A few years ago I'd have never dreamed of putting a child on her! now she is the perfect nanny!

Thanks for saying she looks good too :)

we have a 34 year old here still got it. Must say gorgeous pony and DOES NOT look her age and still got a good shape hubby says as I showed him

Awww bless, thanks all

She struggled last winter but think lowering her meds has helped as she hasn't gone off her food this winter, thank goodness.

I'll get some more Xmas pics of her on Xmas eve hehe

I asked hubby how old he thought she was before I told him and he said 7 or 8. You really have an adorable pony there and I love duns/buckskins
Yes please to more photos

Bless her, she has a proper "old lady" face. Someone I knew had a Welshie that was still doing 3 foot hunter trials aged 32. To look at him you would never have known he was so old. I've always found that horses get better and better with small children with age. Mine was always good but into her 20s children just flocked to her and she tolerated it all like an Earth Mother. Another livery had a young pony and two boys under 9 and I used to come down to find one or both in my stable hugging her legs and her dozing happily. I think they like the fact they could do things like that which they obviously couldn't do with their own animal.

I'm sure given the chance she'd love to still be doing lots of riding too! Shame I've put on too much weight!! a couple of years ago I did think about trying to find a light rider for her but she was always such a minx I thought she'd probably want to do more than I'd be happy with her doing! bless the oldies :)

This was here at around 25/26 when I could still ride her :D

What a happy story! She looks incredible for 30.

My thug too turns into an angel when my nieces do anything with him. In the summer he lives down on the hay fields and we have to go across the resting winter and spring/autumn fields. He's constantly trying to get a sneaky mouthful of grass with me, but when Izzy (5 at the time but tiny) took him to the field after a ride on him this summer, he followed her about like a little puppy, tried to put his head down once and she told it was naughty so he didn't try again! Gratuitous pic as I'm so proud of them both!

Edited to delete photo as it's so big and photobucket won't let me edit! Will try again!
