The sweet arab brood mare i help out with has started to bite.
I'm thinking it might just be because she is due to foal in a couple of months and is already pretty big. Plus it will be her first foal.
But that doesn't mean she can bite.
It has only been a few times, but is getting more frequent. It is also only a nip, not a proper 'rip your arm off' bite. And it is just when she doesn't want you to do something, like picking out her feet (has been funny about her legs being touched as not had much done with her until this year- she's 8. She has been getting much better with her legs and feet though apart from the biting which has recently turned up) or not letting her go quick enough in the field, or when i ducked under her neck the other day and she bit me on the head. I know she might be a bit unballanced due to her big pregnant belly, but she still pulls all sorts of funny shapes to scratch so she can't be that bad. Plus we don't want her to go back to rearing and jumping about when we touch her legs.
She is otherwise the most affectionate mare i have ever met, she will stand and be cuddled all day.
She has just been getting a slap on the shoulder or neck when she has done it, but what else can we do?
She never gets hand fed and lives a life of luxury mostly living out with a stable herd. She is 2nd in command out of 4 at the moment. She comes in every morning for her breakfast and a bit of a fuss. She loves a good brush to get all the itchy bits she can't reach.
