Shetland curiosity

This is mine:

We bought him aged 1 as a companion and he’s more than exceeded expectations and has been broken to ride for my little daughter. We’ve done a few fun shows just for a giggle as we know he is too rotund and not what the judges are after, but we still love him!

I have two of the little loves currently languishing behind 8 thick strands of electric tape least they rampage. One is country show standard (well she was, is 22 now) and the other bred for the Shetland Grand National. They are both standards but the racing bred one is noticeably daintier than the showing bred one.

I want so so many more of them 😁

I have 5 Shetland ponies. 4 are “midis”, between 36 and 38 inches, and my latest acquisition is a full up standard now 39” at 2 years old. I am not really into showing, but occasionally drive the mare in my avatar. I am lucky in that I have plenty of poor quality grazing, ideal for little fatties. They all have wonderful temperaments - cheeky, but nothing nasty. However, all gates are at least double fastened, some triply with chains as well as extra rope. I found the 2 year old trying to open the back door a few days ago. I love them all to bits. I really must try and get some decent photos.

Flint, the grey, was an epic racing shetland. He won so so much before I got him. I couldn't race him though sadly. The only year I was within the rules was foot and mouth year so no racing. He also won a hell of a lot in the show ring in his life time.

They really are amazing little ponies. I wouldn't be without them... mostly 😂😂😂 somedays I would happily throw the gate wide open and let them take their chances with the world!

If you did that Elf the little g$ts would go and run up a bill somewhere them happily lead the irate person they've wronged round to your front door 🤣 So however annoying the be I'd rather keep them vaguely where I know where they are 🤣

I went to sort the motley crew after being away racing all day. When I gave them hay and checked them all this morning all was well. The electric fence battery to Rains and Dempsey was still showing a blue light and a green light. Get back there at 7.30pm - 13 hours after I left them. The battery had gone red and both ponies were no longer where they were supposed to be 🙄 no dinner for them tonight as they have spent goodness knows how long stuff long foggage type grass. Rains will have been the instigator! They know the very second the battery is powered down and they are offskis!

This is precisely why I have a mains electric fence, although they still know when it’s off. My unit is powerful too. I’m waiting for the original to teach the new one that if you hit the bottom strand just right, it’ll land on your forelock and then mane, then you’re under without ever touching your body.

The one in the advert doesn't look broad enough between his legs (although could be wrong - hard to definitively say from that angle) but otherwise not too atrocious. Although you never quite know what you're going to find under all that fluff! Thanks for sharing all your shetlands. Mine is a terrible example of a shetland conformation wise but he is very loved (even if occasionally sworn at!)
