You get the Aberdeen Shetland Sale at the beginning of October. You can usually pick up a colt foal or yearling for 50gns. Fillies go for more but if your not looking for a top quality show pony then 200-300gns is usually the average price.
Carlisle have a sale as well but I can't remember when it is, it's not till the autumn anyway as they are designed to be the foal sales.
If you want a Shetland youngster now not at the end of the summer then you are best going straight to a breeder. Where abouts in Scotland are you and what are you looking for? Standard, Mini, colour, sex etc?
There may be some entered for the rare breeds/horse and pony auction thats held twice a year too, the next one is on Sat 5 May (entries dont close til 30 Apr for horses so not sure whats in it yet horse and pony wise).
Thanks, that is very helpful No, not a particularly good/correct one, just one to buy young, have a companion, then backed for lead-rein, and possibly sold.Prefferably fairly cheap
If you want it to be ridden later in life then you should really go for a standard. Where abouts are you and I can point you in the direction of breeders local to you.
yeah thanks, A Standard is probably the best bet, but i am open minded, as it is more that if it is big enough and suitibale it will be backed, as oppose to buying one to back.I am near kinross,(perth?) , but would prefer to buy from a sale, Thanks anyway
Lol I live just outside of Kinross and breed shetlands but I tend to keep all of mine. The next Shetland sales are October-ish. Good luck in your search!
You could try http://www.shetland-pony.com/ its got some of the breeders around scotland with links to their website and if they've got any for sale. Might be worth a look.
