out of interest how much did you expect to pay?

dont know how much they are now, so no clue. been given several over the years and used to show them.

this isnt for me though, its for YO boy, im doing some research for her

for a LR pony that doesnt bite / kick etc you'll pay anything from 400 pounds upwards.

for one suitable for a child to handle on his/her own you'll probably be looking at more. as a guide I was offered 1k for ours not so long ago.

doesnt have to be handled by child on own.
it seems such a lot for a pony, ive just been offered a tb/connemara mare for 400
so long since i bought a pony ive no clue any more

Your YO might be better going for loaning something. TBH kids grow out of shetties so quick and you do need really good fencing. You can't always turn them out with bigger horses either as their dietry requirements are very different. They get fat at just the whiff of a half decent blade of grass.

The pony club is usually a good source of LR ponies for loan.

Well a big suitcase has gotta be cheaper than a pony it would seem!

I sold a 'just backed' Shetland at the sales for £560 (a lot more than I thought I would) - she is proving to be great with the children - I would expect to pay double that for her now. She was nothing special to look at but has a fantastic temperament.

I paid £60 and £120 each for my mini shets as colts but they are too tiny to be ridden.

My two are 9hh Flint - 12 year old registered shetland, excellent with my two little granddaughters and a poppet for them to ride - and 8hh Charlie - 6 yr old Falabella X Shetland, can't be ridden, but is excellent for them to groom. Together they cost £700 which included Flint's saddle & bridle, turn out rugs, stable rugs, grooming kit and pink poop scoop!

have just seen one on hho for £150, a 4 yr old shetland stallion, do you think that would be suitable for a small boy learning to ride, lol

(yes im joking)

I paid £100 for my girl but that was like 15 years ago! (think I was ripped off as pricey back then!).

You're probably best going to shetland pony sales / farmer sales - you'll usually find some poor mangy looking sheltie there for a tenner. You can get the odd one free but they seem to be very hard to come by (I advertised my girl last year and am still getting calls now!).

a farmer i was talking to about this said another farmer over the hill had bought one from a farmers market and they had it at a bbq
