Shetland ponies

Its great to see other shettie fans on here! I have 8, a stallion, 5 mares and 2 filly foals with one foal due next yr! I love them they have amazing characters!

EKW, you are right. I found some cases particularly sad. You can tell some of them would have made fabulous companions/children's ponies but were a little unattractive in the face, colour was 'plain', you know the story, so they sold for meat money. The way of the auction world I guess. However, the little lady my friends brought home has fallen on her feet!

I will be going to some horse auctions next year with the hope of getting a shetland:D

Shetlands will go for slightly more at normal horse sales as people will pity buy them. Go to the specialised Shetland Pony sales and you'll get a bargin.

We bought 3 colt foals, 3 seperate years, for between 35 & 50 guineas and sold them to America as yearlings to become stallions for £500. All 3 turned out to be real cracking little ponies. If you look past the fluff and look deep at the pony you will be able to split the wheat from the chaff so to speak.

EKW - would your Flint happen to be a Riccalton Shetland?
if so... his sire is the same as one of my shetlands - and his dams dam, is my shetlands dam!

I own 2 shetlands, Riccalton Flamingo and also Kalinka of Skyrack.

Will try and add pics tomorrow but they are both greys :-) although Flamingo was a beautiful strawberry roan when i bought him as a yearling many years ago!

This is my one...Tenston Angelica (Millie) 42" purebred mare, all the way from Proper Shetland! . She is a character! Currently out on loan but has arthritis at 10 yrs old, so not sure my wee one will get to use her :(

Yup he is Riccalton Flint - Southley Tern x Riccalton Firefly.

I also have Riccalton Charm who is Knock Fanfare x Riccalton Firefly.

And Riccalton Prince who is out on loan as a companion who is Claylands Cheiftain x Riccalton Larkspur.

I absolutely love the Riccalton ponies. So much character and fun. Firefly is still alive pottering around Jed.

Merilin Aski, 32" licensed stallion, sire is Firth Popcorn. I am very pleased with this little chap :)

Baliter Nimbus, 28" mare. She came to me in foal to Aski but she won't bred from again.

Edern Sioned, 36" mare.

Sioned's foal, Willowbrook Evie. She is a devil pony already, and I love her spirit!

Edern is the prefix ;)

But yes, she is a stunning little mare. She is a bit timid and we are working on walking on a lead rein at the moment. I think she is a bit dim as it's taking a while to sink in, whereas her 5 month old foal is great on the lead rein already! If we can get her moving nicely we might enter her to a few shows next year :)

I'm so sorry:o:o
I have a quick question, would somebody (me) who weighs 9stone be really too heavy for a shetland?Or my brother, 6 stone?
xx

It depends what size of Shetland. I weigh just under 10st and ride big, up to height, chunky shetlands. I will break anything from chunky 38" upwards. I won't ride anything smaller or dainty.

This is my amazing Shetland - Tigger (Janpau Josh) Sire is Hiltonmill Bobo and Dam Hoardspark Esmie.
I've owned him since he was 9months old he was 10 this May.
Sadly lost his eye as a three year old but never stopped him - just stopped me from showing him (dream I'd had since day one of owning him). However this year after 9 blissful years of chilling he's been broken to drive and been to three shows, his first he was especially successful at!
Here's some photos of my lovely boy!

Cheeky clipped out Tigger!

Thanks! I am stupidly biased but he is my best pal! They are such fab animals far too clever and stubborn, but such great fun too, really versatile even if you don't ride them. Tigs gets up to so much, both stuff I plan and stuff he deems fit i.e mischief!

Barley Sugar stands about 31inches....she believes she is a dog!!

I could post so many pics of him but I may bore people! He is ace though :) his head might not fit through his stable door at this rate! Will try and get a nice photo of him this evening!
All the ponies on here are gorgeous, I've yet to see a bad shetland!
