I bought a Shetland in October, he was a spoilt brat who kicked the dog, kicked me, reared and barged through gateways knocking my sharer down. Then he started doing some work and we had a changed character, almost a pleasure to have around. Fast forward to this morning, sharer rings to say he's knocked out a toprail, jumped the lower one into the yard, trashed every rug hanging on a door, thrown grooming kit all over he place then jumped back into bare field but barged the gap between paddocks onto the lush one and won't be caught. I've spent this morning mending the gap, putting him back where he should be then watching as he bulldozers through my repairs...4 times I've left him in the bare field but warned him if he gives himself lami he needn't look at me to pay the vet bill.
my friend has a mini-*****land who I lead off my boy. He can be an angel, and then the next day completely feral and wont be caught! he can stand for hours to be groomed by a 2 and 5 year old but then decide when being taken for a walk he wants to rear 10 times over nothing!
We have a Dratmoor who goes through any fence we put up. 5 strands of live full power electric and she puts her head down and charges it like a bull. I think some of them realise that the gain of lush grazing is worth the pain of a short shock... until they go down with lami.
Got to love shetlands eh :rolleyes3:
Ours is over 40 and nearly blind both sides, yet he regularly gets through any (even tiny) gaps in the hedges, if there's any gate or door left open and/or unlocked he's in (he's in next doors garden or chicken pens nearly every other day).
We only ended up with him, those many years ago, because the riding school that had him wanted him gone as he played hell on the yard letting horses out of stables alongside the regular chewing and spitting out of small children.
