Shetland pony dies from dog attack

I'd be so tempted to do that too, smiffyimp, but the owners would probably go straight out and get another one they couldn't control. Poor Barley, I'm in tears here myself and feel so sorry for his owner. RIP, Barley. XX

Poor little chap, he looked really good for his age too. What a sad way to go but the right decision.

I live near where it happened and there have been sightings of a puma or large cat in this area! It said 5" paw prints! BIG DOG!

My thoughts too!!
We have a Black Russian Terrier, 11.5 stone and 33 inches at the shoulder. His paws are only just short of 4 inches!!

I sometimes worry about the fact that my shettie will happily double barrel any dog that comes near her - but after reading stories like this it makes me feel glad she does! I have to say, I would take matters into my own hands if I was certain which dog had done this.

RIP little man. :(

Sharon1959 look in h+h archive it happened last week or the week before (not too sure as to date, lack of sleep is causing deprevation ;) )
It's a shame for this wee pony to end his life in such a cruel way. But every couple of weeks you hear another case of dogs attacking horses! About 2 weeks before barley, Mike Tucker was telling his story of a dog attack. Out of control dogs SHOULD be PTS. I have 3 dogs and if any of them were to cause damage to a child, human or horse to the extent the injured party died I would take it to the vets myself (thankfully mine are very friendly and go riding with the nags) and I love my animals to bits. Just tragic.

Actually ,blame the dog owners..not the dog. They are only acting as dogs..hunters that they all basically are,it is entirely the dog`s owner that is to blame..and left to me it is the owner who would get PTS! For instance,Mike Tucker had a problem with bull terriersa, now I

Yes blame the owner not the dog. There is a base instinct inherent in every breathing mammal/creature which is nature ensuring survival. So as humans, we train our animals to behave in a manner we prefer and to allow all to live - same way as we effectively train children! small children can show the very worst of human nature until they are taught they can't behave in certain ways. Fed up with breeds being singled out - go after the idiots who can't be bothered to put the work in to train them.

I know I am safe with my dogs where all horses are concerned because they have been trained around them. Although they do show an alarming lack of respect to the section A and mini shetland. They treat these ponies as large dogs and get right under them at times!

Sorry ,pressed a wrong button..and was unable to go back and edit.SO ,what I was saying is that Mike Tucker had real problems with a couple of bull terriers. Now,I happen to breed these lovely dogs, and have done now since `72.In the right homes they are great clowns and very loving,we interview buyers to make sure the home is right.Number one requirement is a properly fenced and dog proof garden,if not NO SALE.Obviously the ghastly owner of that pair of dogs was totally irresponsible, and no responsible dog breeder should have sold them a puppy, never mind two. Thanks to that owner my breed has been done damage..you always remember the bad dogs, don`t you? my point is..put the bloomin` owners to sleep, rehome the dogs.

My first horse was attacked by a dog in public open space many years ago. The dog was a dog that was owned by someone who had no control over his animal. My horse was bitten after an attack which lasted a good five minutes. Fortunatley there was no lasting damge physically or mentally. Some people whose garden backed onto the wasteland came over with shovels to hit the dog over the head as the dog was savagely attacking my horse but my horse took action when the dog fell between his back legs after suceeding in biting his flank and tearing it open and kicked the dog. The owner went ballistic saying I was responsible for his vets bills, but made a quick getaway when I threatened to report him to the police. when I reported the incident later that day the police said if I was too see the dog again I was to call 999 and they would attend immediately. I think they were concerned (quite rightly so) that the dog would attack a toddler. The dog should have been put down after this incident but the owner wouldn't have done this. I see no point in naming what breed the dog was but needless to say, I have stayed clear of them ever since.

I can fully understand that all dogs have it in them to chase and destroy smaller animals as they see as pray but it is up to us to ensure this does not happen, either by muzzling them or controlling them in such a manner they are unable to carry this out. We have a ten year old beagle bitch. Our hens who free range will peck her wart on her leg if they have the chance because it is bright red and they think it is a tasty morsel of food. She has never retaliated, probably because she knows she is not too because we would be annoyed with her, but it just goes to show that even when pushed to her limit of self control she has been trained adequately to ensure she will not run riot.
