Hi there My mums Shetland pony has sweet itch she keeps rubbing her tail and has rubbed some of her main away , were do i get a Shetland size sweet itch rug from and any advice on how to treat her sweet it h would be appreciated, as vie never delta with it before. Thank you

If you go onto ebay and put in sweetitch rug there is a company that does tiny rugs ( I think they are based on Wales ) about £80 ish I think . Get one that looks and works like the Boett rugs rather than a fly rug , reason being that you need to cover up with the tighter mesh/material . My sons pony had severe SI and I tried all the lotions and potions but the rug worked . You need to put it on Feb-Mar and take it off Nov ish ( obviously take off everyday , brush , ride , whatever you do ) but it will do the job best . I found not to feed pasture mix type of feed as it seems to make it worse , feed Hi Fi if you really need to feed anything , bland is best . Some say garlic in the feed works , you'll find out what works for you .Cream wise , well if you have a rug you will find that you prob dont need any sprays or creams but if you do , look for Camrosa or anything with Neem oil in . Good Luck , its manegable and when you have the right rug and routine its not much more work than a "normal horse " .... just think of your's being "Special " !

Don't rug the poor little devil, spray him with benzyl benzoate watered down to 1 in 3 and/or feed him brewer's yeast (marmite).

My Shetland has severe sweet itch... I've had her for nearly 9 years, if left with no rug she would scratch and scratch till she had no mane, tail, hair on her face or rump and anywhere else she could get to! I use at the mo the Rambo sweet itch hoody (yes comes in 4'3!) as where I keep her will not let me electric fence a paddock for her and it's a much tougher rug than any if the boett types (had all those too at some point). Lotions and potions all work in varying ways but I think end up costing you more in the long run. I am currently trying a new supplement called Sweet Relief but not sure how well it's working yet.

Do you mean Biteback Sweet Relief? Thought that was a cream or spray - do they do a supplement as well? The spray is supposed to be brilliant.
