Hello

I breed British Spotted Ponies but also have a few Shetlands. They are fantastic little ponies and with the right handling make great childrens ponies as well. They are real characters and for me its a pleasure to own them.

What are your plans for your new Shetland should you find one?

i have a mini shetland she is 32"

she is one of best things i've ever bought, she is companion to Bud - he did try to kill her to begin with but now they have a great bond. she doesn't bite kick barge in fact she is so polite, easy to keep eats very little and above all cutest thing ever!!!

all depends on temperament i think, what do you want one for?

We had a whole stud of them, but now we only have one. They are great, but you must remeber to disciplin them as if the were 16.2 and keep control of grazing. Many are huge characters.

If you want to show you need to have a registed one, and fi it was also to ride you would probably want a standard shetland. There aer two 'types', and often show in seperate classes, the black traditional types, Transy type lines who generaly have a bigger head and the modern shetlands of various colour much lighter weight. Our shetty at the moment is a claylands, he has a fab temerament. Just before we had a really sweet Transy mare, she really had a perfect temperament and very traditional looking. We had a waukmill, but she was very nervous, but stunning to look at. We also haad an ulvercroft pony bred to race, and she was very sharp.

Ive got a shetland who I got as a 3yo (companion to my first pony) and she's now 18! Unfortunately within the last 2 years she's been plagued by laminitis. Although she never had it up until going out on loan

You do need to be very careful with their grazing and feed. Otherwise she'd always been nicknamed "The Bitch" because she's always had an attitude - we used to bomb about on her bareback when we were a lot younger and she was crazy. She chucked my friend off and managed to stand on her on the way past. She also managed to make me fall over and then she ran clean over the top of me! She used to be evil. Although she seems to have gotten a lot nicer with age :P

Some of them do have an attitude about being short!

Shetlands are great fun. We have had ours since he was 1, and was bought as a companion. He is now 14 and is fab. However after years of being out with big horses, he does consider himself to be a 17hh Stallion!

He is the nicest pony ever though - acts like a big dog. Carries little kids around the menage and is a real cuty pie. Be careful which one you buy though as some can be little devils!

I got two as companions for my big mare. They are such fun, cheeky but never nasty, but they are escape artists. I have found wire electric fencing run from the mains keeps them in. Tape and battery fencing they just walk through

ooh, i love them... use to ride one called toffee when i was a child, was always falling off him but loved him anyway

a friend is looking for a home for a little black shetland mare with an ever increasing grey face.. cutey and great with kids, will stand all day being brushed etc..

Oh my God, they're the fabbest most fun ponies ever.

But then I am biased.

Seriously? They're great. They're lots of fun.. BUT they are intelligent. They shouldnt be titbitted, they need treating like 'proper' horses (you'd be suprised how many people treat them like pets). If you can do that you'll be fine.

Oh, and I have one for sale, but he's not registered

. Could still do RC M&M though, just not county level.

have got one at our yard and he is a cheeky little devil but perfect for teaching as the rider really has to have their wits about them!!

This is Tony

Mine's an escape artist! Very greedy and rather pushy. But 100% character and a gorgeous boy.

I'm sure if he'd been broken properly by a person small enough and regularly worked he would've been better, but I've had him for 16yrs and his main role has been a companion.
