I am looking in to getting a Shetland pony and I am not completely sure who much land I would need. I know a normal horse needs 1 acre so how much dose a Shetland need
thanks

We kept two on about 3/4 acre, which was plenty! We only ever fed hay when there was snow on the ground and had to strip graze/muzzle in the summer, despite the paddock looking pretty bare.
Hope that helps and feel free to ask any other shetland related questions.
My mini is on about 1/4 acre which is well grazed. In the winter or mid summer when the grass is poor he is allowed to graze with the old boy which is about 2 acres but the grazing here is poor. They come in during the day in summer or in at night in winter so not on grass 24 hrs.
Pony will need company but two on half to one acre would be ok depending on soil/grass type. I prefer a bigger field with a track or divided up so they aren't in the same small field month after month
I've got a lot of land but use only 4ach for 2shetlands and a good doer horse. Strip grazing and feeding hay in spring and autun when grass is rich. At the mo sparky the horse has been seperate by a fence on bare ground soaked hay. The shetlands have had the same acer sectioned in half nearly 5months and just keep nipping the grass off. Do need to rest paddocks really.
