Hi all,

I recently purchased a 10.2hh shetland pony for my 4 year old. He came with a cub saddle and we have been going great guns on leadrein sj (x poles) and cantering all over the place 😁. However, a couple of times the pony has jumped a bit big and my son has whacked himself on the hard bits of the cub saddle (I cant think if it was the back or front now) and it's totally put him off. I want to try a different saddle but I dont have a fortune to spend. I like the idea of suede and a friend has recommended zoe snape. I have also found the dinky suede saddle which seems fairly similar but somewhat cheaper. Has anyone any experience of either saddle or better still can compare the two? We do local shows and PC.

Thanks so much

I have a Zoe Snape saddle and 2 Milner Pads - LOVE them! The Snape is suede so great for wee riders, the Milners are plain leather and quite slippy until you get the hang of riding bareback with stirrups!

Kids very quickly learn seat, leg and balance in these saddles as there really is NOTHING to keep you in! There are some cheaper versions on the market - the Shires Aviemore I think it's called - which will do you fine for what you are doing.

Lots of kids get put off riding by being taken over jumps before they have a secure seat. They find out riding can hurt and get frightened whether it is from landing on hard parts of the saddle or falling off.

We have a Thorn pad. My son had started to not want to ride because of the hard bits on the cub saddle. Thorn pad is amazing, and he’s still madly enthusiastic at nearly 7 years old.

Yes, I can see that. The trouble is that that is what he wants to do, he gets bored just walking about. I've tried to do games and stuff but he wants to jump! When I say jump the pony mostly trots over them anyway

Thanks, good to know. I just cant afford one right now so I'm trying to figure out if there is a cheaper, almost as good alternative 😊
