i am looking to buy a shetland i dont know much about them as i have never had a horse before were is the best place to find one i dont have a lot of money to spare. i have got a nice warm and a cold place to keep it

Shetlands are naughty but good, hard to keep and easy too, not really childrens ponies despite their size. Quick thinking and quick witted. Can take the p**s and be the most loving pony!! Would I have more of them again? NO but YESSSS!!! :D

Oh and your fencing has to be the most escape proof fencing ever!! And all the ones I've had THRIVE on WORK!!! If they are left to get bored, they become very bad tempered. If your not going to use it for riding then harness is a must!

thanks for replies i have been told to get one under 2 years as the get tough as they get older. the fencing wont be a problem and boredom will not be a worry

You won't need to. Shetties just look at food and put on weight. We would really need to know more about where you are planning to keep the pony to know if they need any hay etc. If you "fatten them up" you are likely to end up with a laminitic pony if you aren't careful, unless you start off with an emaciated welfare case.
I don't mean to be harsh, but you sound like you don't know anything. I'm only saying this in the interests of the future pony. Before you get a pony you need to do as much research as possible, including practical research in order to keep the pony correctly. I don't know if the BHS do pony/horse keeping courses or not, or perhaps you could volunteer at a local riding school to get some experience and knowledge - also by doing this if you have a problem you have people you can turn tofor advice.

2 would be a bit much. i was thinking of keeping it in the garden till it is ready as it will save me from having to mow the lawn. how much do i need to learn surly all i have to do is feed it and give it water

if this isn't a wind up then you really should go and speak to riding schools and such places before you get a pony, you obviously have no idea how to care for a pony so therefore should not have one, it would be dead within 6 months with the attitude you have now.

my mate just phoned me he has seen one on preloved but it says its crossed with a caspian. what on earth is a caspian? its about the right age at 11months and at £150 is within my price range.

my worry is it may be a little large and slow to get fat
